England vs Switzerland LIVE: Euro 2022 warm-up game result and reaction as Lionesses win in style
Follow reaction from Zurich after the Lionesses finalise preparations for next week’s home European Championships with a big win
England travel to Zurich to take on Switzerland in their final warm-up match before Euro 2022 gets underway on home soil next week.
The Lionesses are still unbeaten since coach Sarina Wiegman took over last September and impressive victories over Belgium and reigning European champions Netherlands in their most recent two warm-up fixtures have extended that record.
England are legitimate contenders to win Euro 2022 but this is Wiegman’s last chance to take a look at her players before the tournament’s opening match against Austria at Old Trafford next Wednesday.
Switzerland have also qualified for the tournament, so will provide a stiff test for the Lionesses, who have their 50-goal record scorer Ellen White available again after she missed the victory over the Dutch after testing positive for Covid.
Relive the action as England triumph in their final Euros warm-up match against Switzerland:
59’ - Switzerland 0-1 England
Nice link-up play from England as they push forward again. Walsh battles with her marker to keep the attack alive, Daly is slipped in behind the defence and her ball across the six-yard box is half scrambled away before Kirby’s shot is blocked and it’s properly cleared
56’ - Switzerland 0-1 England
Mead tries a long-range effort looking to catch the keeper out almost immediately from kick-off but it sails just wide!
55’ - GOAL! Switzerland 0-1 England (Russo 55')
England finally have the breakthrough!
It starts with Leah Williamson firing a cross-field ball to Rachel Daly, who whips a perfect back-post cross and Alessia Russo nods it back across the goal into the far corner.
A great header from Russo and no more than she deserves for an industrious performance!
54’ - Switzerland 0-0 England
Stanway pushes Aigbogun in the back for a Switzerland free-kick and the game is becoming a bit more physical as Mead is knocked to the ground in a 50-50.
England still looking for a way through
51’ - Switzerland 0-0 England
Hemp receiving treatment on her wrist from the physios but she looks ok to continue with a bit of strapping.
50’ - Switzerland 0-0 England
Lauren Hemp’s first-time ball into the box is just a bit too long and Hemp then takes a blow on the wrist as she competes for a ball in the air. Hopefully that’s nothing serious - she’s a key cog in this England machine.
49’ - Switzerland 0-0 England
A bit disjointed from England at the back but Reuteler takes her eye off the ball and it bobbles through to Earps.
The Lionesses keen to play out from the back and doing ti well so far - that’s a clear staple of what Sarina Wiegman is trying to do since taking charge.
46’ - Switzerland 0-0 England
Early free-kick in a dangerous positon for England as Stanway is brought down. Ball out near the right touchline, level with the edge of the penalty area.
A low delivery from Stanway and Hemp runs in front of her marker, gets her foot to it but can only divert it wide. A good run from Hemp.
45’ - KICK-OFF! Switzerland 0-0 England
A couple of changes for Switzerland at the break but none for England. Back underway in Zurich.
