"Houghton just ran out of time" - England boss Wiegman on ex-skipper Euro omission

England travel to Zurich to take on Switzerland in their final warm-up match before Euro 2022 gets underway on home soil next week.

The Lionesses are still unbeaten since coach Sarina Wiegman took over last September and impressive victories over Belgium and reigning European champions Netherlands in their most recent two warm-up fixtures have extended that record.

England are legitimate contenders to win Euro 2022 but this is Wiegman’s last chance to take a look at her players before the tournament’s opening match against Austria at Old Trafford next Wednesday.

Switzerland have also qualified for the tournament, so will provide a stiff test for the Lionesses, who have their 50-goal record scorer Ellen White available again after she missed the victory over the Dutch after testing positive for Covid.

Relive the action as England triumph in their final Euros warm-up match against Switzerland:

73’ - GOAL! Switzerland 0-2 England (Stanway pen 73’)

GOAL! Georgia Stanway steps up confidently for the penalty and fires the ball into the left-hand corner. Keeper goes the right way but has no chance. Great pen that.

72’ - PENALTY! Switzerland 0-1 England

A lot going on here! Kelly floats in a cross from the left and Hemp volleys it spectacularly, it’s going in but cleared off the line!

A soft penalty then awarded in the aftermath as it gets a bit scrappy.

70’ - SAVE! Switzerland 0-1 England

WHAT A SAVE! A fantastic ball in from the left flank and England breaks free of her marker to head at goal. Friedli does brilliantly to acrobatically tip the ball over the bar though

69’ - Switzerland 0-1 England

Yellow card for Georgia Stanway. Not a great tackle as she slides and sticks her foot in on Maendly but misses the ball - clear booking. This free-kick is probably 22 yards away towards the left side of the box.

Maendly curls the ball in and England just about turn it behind with Calligaris poised to turn it home but the flag goes up for offside anyway

68’ - CLOSE! Switzerland 0-1 England

Lionesses win the corner and Stanway’s front-post cross finds an unmarked England but she heads over the bar.

66’ - CLOSE! Switzerland 0-1 England

Big chance for Switzerland! Aigbogun gets forward from left-back again and England let her deep cross bounce between the defender. Sow gets a touch but Earps can watch it wide. A let-off

65’ - Switzerland 0-1 England

CLOSE! A glorious whipped cross from the right by Kelly, right into the danger area, Hemp gets ahead of her marker and lunges at the ball but can’t quite connect cleanly to divert it home.

64’ - Switzerland 0-1 England

Toone immediately gets some space on the left and a low ball across find Hemp but she can’t get a clean connection on the run and it bobbles through to Friedli.

62’ - Switzerland 0-1 England

The Lionesses showing their depth here - Toone, Carter, Kelly and England not a bad quartet to be bringing on!

Of those who came off, Greenwood’s set-pieces were good today and Russo deservedly got her goal after an impressive performance up front. She might have leapfrogged her way to second in the pecking order behind Ellen White for the No 9 role.

60’ - Switzerland 0-1 England

Quadruple sub for England.

First of all, Fran Kirby off, with Ella Toone coming on. Bethany England on for Alessia Russo, Jess Carter replaces Alex Greenwood and Chloe Kelly enters the fray in place of Beth Mead.
