"If they want to be underdogs that's fine" - Wiegman on Norway test

England face their toughest test of the group stages tonight as they continue their Euro 2022 campaign against Norway at the Amex Stadium in Brighton. This crucial fixture could decide who finishes top of Group A after both teams won their opening fixtures.

The Lionesses won the first match of the tournament 1-0 against Austria last Wednesday, with Beth Mead scoring the only goal of the game in front of a record crowd of 68,871 at Old Trafford. It wasn’t the most convincing performance from Sarina Wiegman’s team who will know they need to improve if they hope to defeat Norway and move back to the top of their group.

Norway demolished Northern Ireland 4-1 in their opening fixture in Southampton and took the lead in the goal difference standings. They are a team full of talent including Lyon’s Ada Hegerberg, Barcelona’s Caroline Graham Hansen and Chelsea’s Guro Reiten but their coach Martin Sjogren has stepped up the mind games by calling his team “underdogs” for the match.

Follow all the action from the Amex Stadium as the Lionesses host Norway:

Euro 2022: White and England chasing ‘big performance’ as Norway provide tough test

Ellen White says England are looking to put in a “really big performance” when they take on Norway on Monday in their second Euro 2022 group game.

The tournament hosts opened their campaign on Wednesday with a 1-0 win over Austria at Old Trafford in front of a competition-record crowd of 68,871.

Echoing boss Sarina Wiegman’s post-match comments, White has said there are “things we could definitely improve on” from that display as the Lionesses prepare to take on a Norway outfit who beat Northern Ireland 4-1 at St Mary’s in their opener on Thursday.

Euro 2022: Ellen White ‘loving every minute’ of the action with England

Ellen White says her recent goalscoring rate is not worrying her, stressing she is “loving every minute” of playing for England at the moment.

White, the Lionesses’ record scorer with 50 goals who netted six at the 2019 World Cup, has registered two in seven appearances for her country so far this year, with the most recent coming in a 10-0 win over North Macedonia in April.

The 33-year-old Manchester City striker also ended up with only four Women’s Super League goals to her name for 2021-22.

Euro 2022: Bright prepared to face Hegerberg

England defender Millie Bright says that she is prepared to face one of the world’s best players with Lyon forward Ada Hegerberg set to line-up for the Norwegians.

Hegerberg, a six-time Champions League winner and recipient of the inaugural Ballon d’Or, impressed in Norway’s 4-1 win over Northern Ireland and even assisted Frida Maanum’s first half goal.

"She’s a top player, everyone is aware of her strengths and how she plays but it’s just another opponent to take care of and defend against," said Bright.

"As defenders, we love that challenge and it’s something that we strive off. You want to be challenged. We’re prepared for what we’re going to face and we’re ready to put our stamp on the game as well."

Euro 2022: Fran Kirby ‘excited’ to see how England can grow after opening win over Austria

Fran Kirby has spoken of her hopes of England’s performances and her own building through Euro 2022 after the hosts opened their campaign with Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Austria.

The tournament curtain-raiser at Old Trafford, which had a competition-record attendance of 68,871, saw the Lionesses claim three points thanks to a 16th-minute Beth Mead finish teed up by Kirby’s pass.

Subsequent attempts to add to the lead included Ellen White heading wide from a good position and a Lauren Hemp effort being well saved by Manuela Zinsberger, whose opposite number Mary Earps then made a couple of stops in the final quarter of the game as Sarina Wiegman’s side saw out the victory.

Euro 2022: England vs Norway

England and Norway have faced each other three times before at a major tournament, with all games coming in the World Cup.

Norway won 2-0 in June 1995 on their way to winning the 1995 edition, but England have won their two most recent meetings, 2-1 in June 2015 and 3-0 in June 2019. This is only England’s fourth ever match at Brighton – they won twice at their old Goldstone Ground in 1991 vs the Soviet Union and in 1994 vs Iceland but lost at the Amex Stadium in 2019 against New Zealand in a friendly.
