"If they want to be underdogs that's fine" - Wiegman on Norway test

England face their toughest test of the group stages tonight as they continue their Euro 2022 campaign against Norway at the Amex Stadium in Brighton. This crucial fixture could decide who finishes top of Group A after both teams won their opening fixtures.

The Lionesses won the first match of the tournament 1-0 against Austria last Wednesday, with Beth Mead scoring the only goal of the game in front of a record crowd of 68,871 at Old Trafford. It wasn’t the most convincing performance from Sarina Wiegman’s team who will know they need to improve if they hope to defeat Norway and move back to the top of their group.

Norway demolished Northern Ireland 4-1 in their opening fixture in Southampton and took the lead in the goal difference standings. They are a team full of talent including Lyon’s Ada Hegerberg, Barcelona’s Caroline Graham Hansen and Chelsea’s Guro Reiten but their coach Martin Sjogren has stepped up the mind games by calling his team “underdogs” for the match.

Follow all the action from the Amex Stadium as the Lionesses host Norway:

England 6-0 Norway

54 mins: Close! Lauren Hemp is found with a low diagonal pass from Keira Walsh and she floats a cross into the box from the left. Guro Pettersen flaps at the ball and punches over to Beth Mead who goes for a first time volley and spoons her effort over the crossbar.

England 6-0 Norway

48 mins: None of England’s players will want to come off and all of the substitutes will be itching to get on. The game has been won and England are heading into the knockout stages.

Will the Lionesses ease up and conserve some energy or will they continue to go all out in search of more goals?

England 6-0 Norway

In just one half of football England equalled the record for most goals scored by a single team at the Uefa European Women’s Championship.

It matches England’s 6-2 loss to Germany in the 2009 final and England’s 6-0 win over Scotland in a group stage match in 2017.

That 6-0 win was the biggest margin of victory in the tournaments history before tonight.

The biggest ever margin of victory in a Euros or World Cup is USA beating Thailand 13-0 in 2019. Is that record going to fall too?

Ellen White then added another goal to her incredible England record when she met Fran Kirby’s cross with a tap-in at the back post.

Her second of the net capped off a record-breaking first half for the Lionesses. No team has led by more goals after the first half of a European Championship match.

England 6-0 Norway

Most of the talk before the tournament was about who would start on the right side for England. Would it be Chloe Kelly or Beth Mead?

Sarina Wiegman elected to have faith with Mead who is repaying her and then some. Mead scored the winner against Austria and has added a brace tonight.

Georgia Stanway started things off by converting a penalty won by Ellen White. The decision was a soft one but Stanway belted it home with sheer confidence.

Lauren Hemp then added a second with a simple tap-in, just getting to the ball ahead of Ellen White. She needed the help of VAR after the goal was initially ruled offside but Hemp has her first goal in the European Championship.

Ellen White then finished off a brilliant solo effort to put England three goals up and give the Lionesses a firm grip on the game.
