Southgate and mason Mount ahead of Hungary WC qualifier

England were back in action this evening as they welcomed Hungary to Wembley Stadium for a World Cup qualifying fixture.

Gareth Southgate would have been hoping for a straightforward night for his team, who entered the game atop Group I, but his side were forced to come from behind to draw with their visitors, while Hungary fans clashed with police soon after the opening whistle.

Many of the away supporters booed as England players took the knee at the start of the game, and police were soon forced to contain the Hungary fans, using batons before retreating. A Metropolitan Police statement later read: “Officers entered the stand to arrest a spectator for a racially aggravated public order offence following comments made towards a steward. As the officers made the arrest, minor disorder broke out involving other spectators.”

On the pitch, Roland Sallai scored from the penalty spot following a high foot by Luke Shaw to put Hungary ahead in the first half, but John Stones restored parity before the break by turning in a Phil Foden free-kick at the back post. The result saw England retain top spot in their qualifying group for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Follow all the fallout from England vs Hungary below.

England 1 - 1 Hungary

90 mins: Szoboszlai is booked for time-wasting whilst taking a throw in. There’s four minutes of added time to play. Plenty of time for either team to score a winner.

If England don’t win this game their four point lead will be cut to three as Poland are currently beating Albania 1-0.

87 mins: Foden flicks a decent pass over the top and into the box as Abraham makes a run through the middle. He stretches for the ball and almost manages to tip it past Gulacsi but the Hungarian goalkeeper gets behind the ball to smother it.

England 1 - 1 Hungary

84 mins: Hungarian substitute Holender has a chance to put his team in front as the ball comes to him on the inside left. He rolls the ball onto his right foot and hits a curling effort towards the far top corner. He gets too much of the ball though and sends it soaring over the crossbar.

81 mins: Stones landed awkwardly as went to ground after his header and needs looking at by the medical team. It looks like a potential wrist injury. His right wrist has been strapped by the medics but he’s going to carry on playing.

England 1 - 1 Hungary

78 mins: Hungary have made this difficult for England. They’ve been composed and solid defensively, closing England down quickly and not giving them any time on the ball in the final third.

Mount is fouled just inside Hungary’s half. Shaw curls the free kick into the penalty area and Stones throws himself at the ball. He shoulders past Kecskes to win the ball and heads the ball into the ground where it bounces up nicely for Gulacsi.

England 1 - 1 Hungary

75 mins: Chance! Saka’s short pass into the box takes a deflection and loops into the box. It drops for Kane who snatches at the chance and scuffs the effort well wide of goal.

It’s Kane’s last involvement as Gareth Southgate makes a couple of changes. Kane and Sterling are off with Jordan Henderson and Tammy Abraham replacing them.

England 1 - 1 Hungary

69 mins: Save! England’s high press wins the ball high up the pitch. Sterling leaves the ball for Kane and sprints into the middle of the box. Kane threads a pass through to him as Gulacsi flies off his line. Sterling gets to the ball first and tries to slip it through the goalkeeper’s legs but Gulacsi makes the block!

England 1 - 1 Hungary

66 mins: England are doing their best to pin Hungary in their own half but the ball comes to Sterling and he’s charged down by two defenders losing the ball. He tries to win it back but gives away a foul.

England 1 - 1 Hungary

63 mins: Close! Foden swings the corner into the far side of the area and picks out Stones. He rises above everyone else to win the header and sends it narrowly wide of the nearest post.

Gareth Southgate makes a change and brings on Bukayo Saka in place off Jack Grealish. It’s harsh on Grealish who’s probably been England’s best player so far .
