Southgate and mason Mount ahead of Hungary WC qualifier

England were back in action this evening as they welcomed Hungary to Wembley Stadium for a World Cup qualifying fixture.

Gareth Southgate would have been hoping for a straightforward night for his team, who entered the game atop Group I, but his side were forced to come from behind to draw with their visitors, while Hungary fans clashed with police soon after the opening whistle.

Many of the away supporters booed as England players took the knee at the start of the game, and police were soon forced to contain the Hungary fans, using batons before retreating. A Metropolitan Police statement later read: “Officers entered the stand to arrest a spectator for a racially aggravated public order offence following comments made towards a steward. As the officers made the arrest, minor disorder broke out involving other spectators.”

On the pitch, Roland Sallai scored from the penalty spot following a high foot by Luke Shaw to put Hungary ahead in the first half, but John Stones restored parity before the break by turning in a Phil Foden free-kick at the back post. The result saw England retain top spot in their qualifying group for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Follow all the fallout from England vs Hungary below.

15 mins: Szobobszlai has started well for Hungary. He breaks forward as England lose the ball on the halfway line and comes up against John Stones. Szabolcs Schon makes a run into the box from wide and Szoboszlai’s attempted cross doesn’t reach him as Stones blocks it inside his own area.

12 mins: Harry Kane wins the ball from the corner and has a free header from just outside the six-yard area. He heads it over the goal but is penalised for a push in the build up.

Hungary then break down the right side with Szobobszlai sending a cross into the box. It’s met by Nego who’s headed effort doesn’t trouble Jordan Pickford.

9 mins: Chance! Shaw sends a pass up to Grealish who flicks it back to the defender as he sweeps up the pitch. Shaw swings a cross into the box and almost picks out Harry Kane only for Loic Nego to squeeze in front of him and touch the ball behind for a corner.

6 mins: There are boos around the stadium as a cluster of Hungarian fans try to force their way deeper into the stands but are blocked by the police.

On the pitch, Luke Shaw feeds a pass down the line for Mason Mount who wins a throw in. England take it quickly who the ball coming to Jack Grealish. He plays it into the box for Mount but Adam Lang intercepts the pass and wins a free kick on the edge of his own penalty area.

Hungary then break into the vacant space left by Walker with Dominik Szoboszlai taking the ball down the pitch. He takes on John Stones and has a cross into the box blocked.

Harry Kane leads out England to a big round of applause from the fans. The Three Lions could effectively sow up qualification for the World Cup with a victory tonight, although it won’t be mathematically official.

Gareth Southgate has certainly named a team that will go for the win.
