Potter: "We are nearly there"

Kai Havertz’s brilliant second-half goal earned Chelsea a 2-1 win at RB Salzburg which booked their place in the Champions League knockout stages.

The Germany international curled in a stunning effort midway through the second half to decide a testing evening in Austria and extend Graham Potter’s unbeaten start to his Blues reign to nine games.

The Premier League side had gone ahead through a fine strike by Mateo Kovacic and only a string of saves by impressive home goalkeeper Philipp Kohn stopped it being a rout at half-time.

The Austrian side levelled early in the second half through Junior Adamu’s superb breakaway effort as Chelsea looked in peril. Havertz had the final say, though, winning the match in style and sending his side through with his 20-yard effort that found the top corner.

Chelsea will top Group E if Dinamo Zagreb fail to beat AC Milan in the late kick-off. Relive the action as Chelsea beat RB Salzburg in the Champions League:

Celtic crash out of Europe after home draw with Shakhtar Donetsk

Celtic will not play in European football beyond the World Cup break after being held to a 1-1 home draw by Shakhtar Donetsk.

Giorgos Giakoumakis gave the hosts the lead at half-time but a brilliant finish from exciting young talent Mykhailo Mudryk earned the visitors a point and made it 10 Champions League home games without a win for Celtic, a run which stretches back nine years.

The result consigned Celtic to a bottom-placed finish in Group F ahead of their final game against holders Real Madrid in Spain next week and blocked their escape route to the Europa League.

The Scottish champions did not quite create the quality of chances they had in earlier group games but Kyogo Furuhashi missed an excellent opportunity to put them back in front. However, the visitors subsequently produced a strong contender for miss of the season.

Celtic’s tally of one point and two goals from their opening four matches was scant reward for their attacking ambition and Ange Postecoglou was even bolder in his approach for their final home match in this season’s competition.

Post-match reaction from Celtic goalscorer Giorgos Giakoumakis who told BT Sport: “When we started the group stages, we were dreaming bigger. We were dreaming that we could pass to the next stage.

“We’ve had some good performances but unfortunately, we couldn’t combine them with good results and more points, so that’s why we didn’t pass through.

“Even when you score your first goal in the Champions League - something you’ve been dreaming of since you were a little boy - in the end, you can’t be happy, because you want to succeed with your team.

“We gave everything. We have to move forward. We keep moving and keep going.

“We have to win the league, that’s our target this year. We have to win the league so we can play Champions League again next year.”

Celtic travel to the Santiago Bernabeu next week for the final gameweek of the Champions League group stages. Madrid lost 3-2 to RB Leipzig which means they still need a point to secure top spot in Group F.

At the very least it should be an exciting encounter for the Scottish side.

Full-time: Celtic 1-1 Shakhtar

90+3 mins: There goes the final whistle. Celtic are out of Europe. The wait for a Champions League victory at Celtic Park goes on.

They drew 1-1 with Shakhtar Donetsk yet again but it’s not enough for the Scottish side to get themselves into the Europa League. For Shakhtar though that’s a great result.

It keeps the Ukrainian side in touch with RB Leipzig and they know that a victory in the final gameweek will put them through to the round of 16.

Celtic 1-1 Shakhtar

90 mins: Three minutes of added time to play. Shakhtar are offering hardly anything in Celtic’s final third, the home side are the ones making things happen.

An aerial pass comes into the box and Turnbull sends it down to Giakoumakis who turns the ball onto the post! He’s gutted until he realises the whistle has gone for a foul in the build-up by Turnbull.

Celtic 1-1 Shakhtar

88 mins: Chance! James Forrest’s deflected cross comes into the Shakhtar box and bounces in front of Matt O’Riley. He sticks out his left leg and side foots a shot over to the back post but it curls agonisingly wide of the target!

Celtic 1-1 Shakhtar

85 mins: Shakhtar need to take at least a point from the game as a win over RB Leipzig on the final matchday would send them through to the knockout rounds.

Celtic have to win or else their final group game against Real Madrid will be the last match they play in Europe this year.

David Turnbull is on to replace Reo Hatate.

Celtic 1-1 Shakhtar

82 mins: Shakhtar haven’t exactly shut up shop but they’re less keen to overcommit men up the pitch. Giakoumakis meanwhile is struggling for Celtic and keeps on clutching at his himstring.

Less than 10 minutes to play, will we see a winning goal?

Celtic 1-1 Shakhtar

79 mins: Forest takes on the Shakhtar left-back and does a step-over to get past him on the outside. He crosses the ball but it’s too far ahead of Mooy and Bondar can scurry it away.

Celtic are pushing for the winner. Shakhtar defending deep and looking to counter again.
