The Blues beat the defending champions three successive times at the end of last season, including the Champions League final in May to become European champions for a second time. But City earned a measure of revenge with an all-important three points in their bid to defend their crown on Saturday afternoon.

Gabriel Jesus scored the only goal of the game after his deflected second-half shot beat Edouard Mendy in the home goal.Thomas Tuchel's side responded to the setback but were unable to get back on terms and failed to register a single shot on target.

48 mins: Mbeumo weaves into the right side of the box and looks to take on Van Dijk. He shows a bitt too much of the ball to the Liverpool centre-back and Van Dijk is able to turn it behind for a corner.

Janelt swings the corner into the box and almost finds Toney but the cross goes over his head and Liverpool work it away.

39 mins: Salah tries to manoeuvre in the box but gets shut out and has to give the ball to Henderson. He knocks it to Jones who shoots from range and gets the shot through to the goalkeeper. Raya leaps to his right and pushes the ball onto the back post but the rebound comes out to Jota. He sends it back across goal towards the far post but Raya jumps in front of the effort and deflects it wide of goal.

36 mins: Pinnock isn’t off yet. Mathais Jorgensen has been sent out to warm up for Pinnock is giving it another go for now. He boots a clearance up the pitch and finds Mbeumo. The cross comes in from the left wing and Toney almost brings it down for a shot in the box but Mane is back to defend.
