Brighton completed a remarkable comeback victory over Tottenham to continue their unbeaten home start to the Premier League season.

Fabian Hurzeler’s hosts had appeared bound for defeat after Spurs seized control of the contest with two first-half goals, but roared back after the interval to strike thrice in 20 minutes and swing the game their way. Danny Welbeck headed home to complete the turnaround after Yankuba Minteh and Georginio Rutter had restored Brighton to level pegging. It had threatened to be another tough day for Hurzeler’s side after yet more defensive lapses allowed Brennan Johnson and James Maddison to pounce, but a stirring turnaround lifts them above their opponents and into the top six.

Johnson’s goal meant the Welshman had scored in six successive games but Ange Postecoglou sorely missed absent captain Son Heung-min as his side collapsed. The Australian will have plenty to chew over during the international break as he looks to restore order.

Second half...

A half-time switch from Brighton, Pervis Estupinan on for Ferdi Kadioglu to add some more attacking ideas from left-back.

We’ve resumed in the evening gloom in Falmer.

HT: Brighton 0-2 Tottenham

Another pleasing half for Ange Postecoglou, his side having created the better openings of a predictably fun and funky affair. Spurs flew out of the blocks and should, really, have taken one of three opportunities inside the first five minutes, but they could rely on Brennan Johnson to put them ahead as he continued his fine scoring run. Brighton settled and began to threaten but James Maddison’s goal ensures the visitors head down the tunnel much the happier of the two sides.

Into three additional minutes. Kaoru Mitoma has looked Brighton’s biggest threat so far and again gets by Pedro Porro, but Tottenham have sufficient coverage to prevent further danger developing.

Brennan Johnson breaks beyond the left side of Brighton’s back four, and given his recent form, it’s a surprise that he blazes over the bar from a promising position. It’s amazing what a bit of confidence can do, though - Johnson looked headed for the periphery before this scoring run began but now appears an ever more integral part of this Spurs side.

Brighton 0-2 Tottenham, 40 minutes

It has just felt a little too easy for Tottenham to create opportunities in this first half, Brighton again too loose at the back after their struggles against Chelsea last weekend. Fabian Hurzeler looks frustrated on the touchline.

GOAL! Brighton 0-2 TOTTENHAM (James Maddison, 38 minutes)

But Tottenham have their second!

Bart Verbruggen won’t want to watch this one again. Timo Werner rolls the ball across the edge of the box to James Maddison, left vacant in just the space he’d like to be with Brighton dragged out of shape. His shot is nothing particularly bothersome, neither with the oomph or precision one would normally require to beat a goalkeeper from that distance.

But a skiddy surface perhaps plays in his favour, the ball skipping beneath Verbruggen’s extending left arm and into the bottom corner.

Brighton 0-1 Tottenham, 36 minutes

The momentum has swung since that Tottenham opener, Brighton’s fans (and players) lifting the volume. Jack Hinselwood’s forward foray allows the midfielder to latch on to Kaoru Mitoma’s latest inswinger from the left, but he doesn’t generate sufficient purchase on his header to hit the target.

Brighton 0-1 Tottenham, 33 minutes

Brighton’s best spell of the match continues, Mitoma and Yankuba Minteh putting Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie in trouble in turn. A corner looks dangerously placed, too, but a Brighton contestant is deemed to have fouled a visiting counterpart before he can line up his header.

A poor miss from Danny Welbeck! An anguished look to the heavens from the veteran striker, found deftly by a bendy outside-of-the-boot cross from Kaoru Mitoma but unable to divert it goalwards.
