Manchester United suffered an embarrassing 4-0 defeat to Brentford as Erik ten Hag’s second game in charge resulted in one of the club’s worst results in their Premier League history.

United have now lost both of their opening Premier League matches under Ten Hag but the club plunged to new depths as a brilliant Brentford side raced into a four-goal lead inside 34 minutes.

Brentford took the lead after only 10 minutes thanks to a mistake by David De Gea, with the United goalkeeper at fault again as Mathias Jensen doubled the lead.

Brentford were 3-0 up within half an hour when Ben Mee bundled the ball home at the far post from a corner and it was 4-0 five minutes later when Ivan Toney teed up Bryan Mbeumo to finish past De Gea.

Relive the action and follow the reaction from the Brentford Community Stadium below:

51 mins: Another chance. Again from Dalot towards Ronaldo - he rises well but can’t keep the header down.

Brentford 4-0 Manchester United

50 mins: Chance for Ronaldo. Dalot sends in an early cross but Ronaldo’s header from 12 yards goes wide.

He thumps the ground in frustration.

Brentford 4-0 Manchester United

49 mins: Goodness me. Sancho passes the ball straight out for a corner kick, missing Dalot.

The corner goes all the way through, Toney sets up Norgaard and De Gea is forced into a save at his near post!

Brentford 4-0 Manchester United

48 mins: We’re back underway but United are still asleep. A quick throw in releases Rico Henry before any United player realises, and his cross is cleared at the front post.

Brentford 4-0 Manchester United

Manchester United had never trailed by four goals at half time before today.

Lisandro Martinez, Fred and Luke Shaw are hauled off, but it could have been any of the 11.

Brentford have never scored five goals in a Premier League match before...

HT: Brentford 4-0 Manchester United

Looks like there will be a flurry of changes for United at the break.

Malacia, Varane and McTominay all seem set to be introduced.

HT: Brentford 4-0 Manchester United

A calming final few minutes to what has been a sensational half of football for Brentford.

A nightmare for United, who have been hammered. Second best in every department and alarming signs for Erik ten Hag.

Now this game is about pride and fight, who will stand up for the visitors in the second half?

GOAL! Brentford 4-0 Manchester United (Mbeumo)

Can you believe it? Manchester United annihilated.

Toney too strong, composure, then the skill to deliver the pass.

One end to the other. Mbeumo wants it more, he storms through on goal and calmly slots past De Gea, a subliime goal.

GOAL! Brentford 3-0 Manchester United (Mee)

GOAL! Stunning scenes, United bullied here, in the air, Ben Mee rises high and nods home.

Maguire looks lost, United a shambles. It’s 3-0 with just half an hour played.

The Bees are running riot!
