England have been left with a mountain to climb to regain the Women’s Ashes after Australia seized the upper hand in the multi-format series by triumphing in the lone Test.

Resuming on 116 for five in pursuit of 268 on a final day where Trent Bridge threw open its gates free of charge, England subsided to 178 all out inside 90 minutes despite a defiant 54 from Danni Wyatt.

Wily off-spinner Ashleigh Gardner’s eight for 66 saw her walk away with a 12-wicket match haul as Australia claimed an 89-run victory to collect four all-important points ahead of the ODIs and T20s.

If England are to retrieve the urn for the first time since 2015 they will have to prevail in five of the six white-ball contests against the ODI and T20 world champions, with two points per win on offer.

Australia’s Tahlia McGrath speaking to BBC Sport:

“How good was Ash?! She just kept going and kept executing. We just played boring cricket but the whole time we were nervous. Every time there was drinks we were panicking but we did the simple things well.

“We knew we were going to have to bowl really well until we took that last wicket. Yes the pitch was doing a bit but England have been unreal the whole Test match. I love the Dukes ball. It’s been really fun learning to bowl with it. The preparation we’ve done has been really valuable.

“We were cautious coming into this seres. England are playing really well. Playing in away conditions we knew it would be tough, there’s still six games to go and we’ll celebrate today and then prepare again. The game just changed all the time, with the ball we just needed to stay patient. Lots of really important moments throughout the game.”

Reaction from England batter Danni Wyatt who told TMS:

“I really thought we were going to do it this morning, so I’m pretty disappointed. It was pretty hard to bat out there. Kate Cross and Sophie Ecclestone had a good effort out there.

“There is a sense of missed opportunity, we will have a chat in the changing room about it. There are a lot of positives so we have to try to dust this down and smash them in the white ball stuff. There’s a few tired bodies out there and now we just need to dust ourselves off and get ready for the next challenge.

“Ultimately, we didn’t get enough runs but that’s just the game. We need to think of the positives. I woke up really excited and did my best which wasn’t enough in the end. It’s very different to ODIs and it’s been challenging. Australia are the world’s best team for a reason, they have a number of world class players but so do we but we’ll feel confident going into the T20s.”

Australia’s Ash Gardner ends with figures of 8-66 in England’s second innings.

She is just the second woman, after India’s Neetu David in 1995 - also against England - to take eight in an innings of a Test.

Her match figures of 12-165 are the second best in women’s Tests. Only Shaiza Khan - 13-226 for Pakistan v West Indies in 2004 - has taken more wickets in a match.

No other bowler has taken more than 11.

Australia now lead the Ashes by four points with three ODIs and three T20s left to play. As Australia hold the Ashes, England need to win five of those six games to regain the trophy.

It’s a mammoth task for Heather Knight’s team.

A wonderful test match comes to a close with Australia on the winning side. Ashleigh Gardner was just too good for England this morning.

She took all five of the host’s remaining wickets to finish with figures of 20-1-66-8. Gardner’s match figures of 12/165 are the best ever in a Test match at Trent Bridge.
