From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Mohammed Shami's final-over hat-trick broke Afghanistan hearts as India sealed an 11-run World Cup win at Southampton.

Mohammad Nabi's smart 52 had Afghanistan eyeing the greatest-ever World Cup upset, only for Shami to send him packing - then clean bowl Aftab Alam and Mujeeb Ur Rahman in the next two balls.

Shami's four for 40 and Jasprit Bumrah's two for 39 delivered a bowling masterclass to allow India to defend their paltry 224 for eight from their full 50 overs.

49.1 India 219/6 Mohammed Shami 1 Kedar Jadhav 51

Jadhav brings up his sixth half century in ODIs and it would have been with a four but for Rashid Khan's brilliant fielding.

Khan does well to prevent a four, but stays down and is getting a bit of treatment after landing heavily on his side.

He's up and moving!

Bowled him!

M Shami (1) b Gulbadin Naib

Great variation from the Afghanistan skipper to send it in from the back of his hand and Shami lines it up to smack it for a six but the ball crashes into his stumps.

...and there's that pose.

He's got another

Kedar Jadhav (52) c (Sub), b Gulbadin Naib

Jadhav tries to get the ball over cover and can only find the fielder.

The captain has his second of the over.

India 224-8

Afghanistan need 225 to record a famous victory.

New Zeland in trouble

Elsewhere, The Windies got off to a flyer at Old Trafford, Sheldon Cottrell producing his customary salute celebration twice in the opening over after removing openers Martin Guptill and Colin Munro.

Guptill got a beauty first up, a fuller delivery swinging back into his pads. The umpire's finger stayed down but Windies captain Jason Holder was vindicated in his decision to review.

There was no need to appeal the second wicket to fall, another inswinging yorker castling Munro and leaving the Kiwis 10 for two after the first over.

In Cottrell's next over, he twice beat the outside edge of New Zealand captain Kane Williamson, who made an unbeaten century in the win over South Africa to get his side over the line. (PA)

Second innings

Right, here we go. Can Afghanistan produce one of the biggest shocks in World Cup history and hold on against India?

Jack Watson22 June 2019 14:31

1.0 Afghanistan  1/0 Hazrat Zazai 1 Gulbadin Naib 0 (Target 225)

Mohammed Shami opens the bowling for India. He begins with two slips and twice comes close to finding Zazai's outside edge.

1.2 Afghanistan 5/0 Hazrat Zazai 1 Gulbadin Naib 0 (Target 225)

Here comes Jasprit Bumrah. The two slips remain in place as Kohli targets quick wickets from his seamers.

Oh no, not the best start. He second ball sneaks past MS Dhoni and rolls on to the rope.

1.3 Afghanistan 6/0 Hazrat Zazai 2 Gulbadin Naib 0 (Target 225)

Well played from Zazai to dig out a yorker after getting his legs set against Bumrah's trademark delivery.

2 Afghanistan 6/0 Hazrat Zazai 2 Gulbadin Naib 0 (Target 225)
