Your support makes all the difference.England kicked off the summer a superb performance on the opening day of their four-day test match against Ireland. With the clouds hanging overhead in this morning Ben Stokes won the toss and elected to bowl.
In the absence of James Anderson, Stuart Broad led the attack and gave England the early initiative reducing the visitors to 19-3. James McCollum (36) dug in but couldn’t stop the host from running rampant. Jack Leach was backed once again by his captain and was rewarded with three wickets while Matt Potts chipped in with a couple but it was Broad’s day. He took 5-51 to get on the Lord’s honours board as Ireland were dismissed for just 172.
In response England’s opening pair made hay in the early evening sunshine. Zak Crawley rode his luck on his way to 56 before chipping a drive back to Fionn Hand who claimed his maiden test wicket for Ireland. Ben Duckett (60*) and Ollie Pope (29*) saw England safely through to the end of the day with the deficit just 20 runs.

Ireland 19-1, McCollum 9, Balbirnie 0, Potts 0-11 (3)
Matt Potts is getting the ball talking now! He has been shaping the ball to move away from the right-handed batters but rolls his hand down the side of the ball on release and gets it to land perfectly.
The ball hits the seam and jags back towards James McCollum who leaves it on length and breathes a sigh of release as the ball flies over the stumps.
McCollum stays composed and smokes a square drive to the point boundary off the last ball of the over.
Ireland 15-1, McCollum 5, Balbirnie 0, Broad 1-8 (3)
Ireland’s captain, Andy Balbirnie is the new batter and safely navigates the rest of the over from Stuart Broad. His final delivery seems to stick in the turf and Balbirnie loops the ball towards mid-on.
He plays it with soft hands though and there’s no real danger of giving up a catch with the ball falling well short of the fielder.
Wicket! Moor LBW Broad 10 (12) - Ireland 15-1 (4.2)
Stuart Broad strikes first! He brings Peter Moor across his stumps with a tempter outside off then darts the second ball of the over into his pads.
Moor plays across the ball, misses it and is struck right in front of the stumps. An easy decision for the umpire.
Ireland 15-0, McCollum 5, Moor 10, Potts 0-7 (2)
Still trying to settle into his stride, Matt Potts gets a bit of movement off the pitch and nips the ball away from James McCollum who tucks his bat inside the ball and watches it go by.
He’s been the slightly more watchful of the two opening batters but has negotiated these opening overs quite well.
Potts sends down the first maiden of the day.

Oh lovely! Broad tempts Moor into a drive but the Irishman is up to the task. He strides to meet the ball and nestles it beautifully down the ground.
The fielder at wide mid-off can’t get across to cover it and Moor picks up another boundary.
Ireland 11-0, McCollum 5, Moor 6, Broad 0-4 (1.3)
Stuart Broad continues with Ben Stokes setting a field with four slips and a wide gap between point and mid-off. Broad targets a line just outside off stump and finds the edge of James McCollum’s bat.
The opener gets lucky and a thick edge sends the ball flying wide of fourth slip allowing the batters to scramble through for three.
Ireland 8-0, McCollum 2, Moor 6, Potts 0-7 (1)
Potts settles into a decent pace through his first over, getting up to around 85mph without too much trouble. He pushes the ball slightly fuller to Peter Moor who drives through the gap at cover to collect two.
Seven runs come from Potts’ over. It’s a good start from Ireland.
Ireland 6-0, McCollum 2, Moor 4, Potts 0-5 (0.3)
Matt Potts is thrown the ball by the England captain and has the opportunity to steam in from the Nursery End. James McCollum works him away for another single to bring Peter Moor back on strike.
Potts strays onto the Irishman’s legs and Moor whips his wrists over the ball and flicks it through square leg to record the first boundary of the day.
The first over was underway, as Stuart Broad ran in from the Pavilion End will ball in hand.
James McCollom, not to be confused with England head coach Brendon McCullum played a forward defence for the first ball of the day before getting off the mark with his third delivery.
However, there was excitement from Stuart Broad’s fourth ball, and Peter Moor’s first, with a huge appeal from bowler and those in the slips for a caught behind, but England elected not to review, with replays showing the ball just going past the outside edge.
At the end of the first over, Ireland had one run.

Stuart Broad is given the nod for the first over and will lead the attack for England through this test match.
Broad comes bounding in from the Pavilion End, angles the ball into the pads of James McCollum and the Irish opener defends it beautifully with a classic forward defence.
