England kicked off the summer a superb performance on the opening day of their four-day test match against Ireland. With the clouds hanging overhead in this morning Ben Stokes won the toss and elected to bowl.

In the absence of James Anderson, Stuart Broad led the attack and gave England the early initiative reducing the visitors to 19-3. James McCollum (36) dug in but couldn’t stop the host from running rampant. Jack Leach was backed once again by his captain and was rewarded with three wickets while Matt Potts chipped in with a couple but it was Broad’s day. He took 5-51 to get on the Lord’s honours board as Ireland were dismissed for just 172.

In response England’s opening pair made hay in the early evening sunshine. Zak Crawley rode his luck on his way to 56 before chipping a drive back to Fionn Hand who claimed his maiden test wicket for Ireland. Ben Duckett (60*) and Ollie Pope (29*) saw England safely through to the end of the day with the deficit just 20 runs.

Relive the action from Day One at Lord’s as England take on Ireland:

Ireland 32-3, McCollum 12, Stirling 10, Tongue 0-0 (2)

There’s a look of determination on Josh Tongue’s face as he comes bounding up to the wicket. He’s got three slips, a backward point and cover on the legside.

His speeds are good, consistently pushing into the high 80s - with a high of 88mph - and is testing McCollum with a line just outside the off stump.

The Ireland opener isn’t biting though and plays out another maiden to end the first hour’s play.

Ireland 32-3, McCollum 12, Stirling 10, Leach 0-6 (1)

After a testing hour of seam bowling, Ireland’s batters may fancy a bit of Jack Leach who replaces Matt Potts at the Nursery End.

Paul Stirling sweeps him away for a boundary and there are another couple of singles in the over as Leach is worked away from six runs.

It’s a positive sign for the slow left-armer though as Ben Stokes is giving him an early bowl with Ireland under a bit of pressure.

Ireland 26-3, McCollum 11, Stirling 5, Tongue 0-0 (1)

Josh Tongue is given his first bowl in international cricket and coincidentally his first bowl at Lord’s. The 25-year-old has never played at the Home of Cricket and had never been to the ground before training here ahead of this match.

A tall, strapping man, he hits the deck hard getting a bit of extra bounce. He’s accurate and, like Potts, gets a maiden under his belt early on.

A great start to his England career.

Ireland 26-3, McCollum 11, Stirling 5, Potts 0-12 (5)

10 overs bowled already and England will be over the moon with their work. Stuard Broad and Matt Potts have been accurate and threatening, ripping through Ireland’s top order.

The visitors have a rebuilding job on their hands.

Sonia Twigg reporting from Lord's

“We had an interesting problem with the in-ground speedometer earlier, it was reading both Broad and Potts as bowling around 55mph, which is obviously not the case.

“The ground is not as full as you might expect for a first Test of an international summer, but the Warner stand looks full as well as the members areas of the tavern and there are good crowds throughout the ground.

“There was a nice round of applause in typical Lord’s fashion for the introduction of Josh Tongue.”

Ireland 24-3, McCollum 9, Stirling 5, Broad 3-13 (4.3)

Paul Stirling is away!

Broad strays too far down the legside, though that could be a deliberate ploy with the leg slip still in place, and Stirling flicks it away to fine leg for four runs.

Some smart batting sees him get off strike with a push into midwicket. He’ll feel a lot heap better now that he’s off the mark.

Ireland 19-3, McCollum 9, Stirling 0, Potts 0-11 (4)

The job that Matt Potts is doing can’t be underestimated either. Stuart Broad has taken all the wickets this morning but Potts has got the ball to nibble around in these bowler-friendly conditions and is keeping it tight at the Nursery End.

He’s sends down another maiden to keep the pressure on opener James McCollum.

Ireland 19-3, McCollum 9, Stirling 0, Broad 3-8 (4)

Ireland’s stalwart batter, Paul Stirling, is reprieved on his very first ball. Stuart Broad wraps him on the pads and England fly up in unison with their appeal.

The umpire raises his finger but Stirling reviews the decision immediately. Ball-tracking comes to his rescue and shows that the ball was missing the leg stump.

He survives but Broad is running rampant. He’s got three early wickets.

Wicket! Tector ct. Potts, b. Broad 0 (2) - Ireland 19-3 (6.3)

Two in the over! Harry Tector is the new batter for Ireland and Ben Stokes immediately sticks a leg slip. Tector leaves his first ball as it’s wide of off stump then advances down the track next up.

The ball is angled across him and Tector flicks it straight into the waiting hands of Matt Potts! Ireland are three down.

Wicket! Balbirnie ct Crawley, b. Broad 0 (5) - Ireland 19-2 (6.1)

Ireland are two down! The captain nibbles at a good length delivery from Stuart Broad and gets a thick edge into the slips. Zak Crawley drops low to his left and grabs hold of the ball just in front of Joe Root at first slip.
