A thrilling penultimate day at Birmingham 2022 has delivered more action to this thoroughly entertaining Commonwealth Games, with 45 gold medals in total set to be dished out by the end of the evening.

Tonight was all about Laura Muir, and the Scotland star produced a brilliant kick to win gold in the women’s 1500m final, adding to her 800m bronze from the previous evening. Later, a wide-open men’s 800m final, was won by Kenya’s Wyclife Kinyamal ahead of Australia’s Peter Bol, with England’s Ben Pattison taking bronze.

Eilish McColgan added to her 10,000m gold with a gutsy silver in the 5,000m and there was further joy as England’s women wrapped up the action at the Alexander Stadium with a dramatic gold in the 4x400m final. It was short lived, however, after the team was disqualified following a lane infringment.

Earlier, home-town hero Matt Hudson-Smith was left disappointed when forced to settle for silver in the men’s 400m, while Victoria Ohuruogu was more upbeat, grabbing a silver in the women’s 400m final. There was drama in the 4x100m relay finals, with England men and Nigeria women prevailing.

In the afternoon, a dramatic men’s cycling road race saw Geraint Thomas fall just short with a late push to break the lead group, leaving New Zealand’s Aaron Gate to sprint clear and win a fourth gold at these Games. And in the result of the day, England pulled off a shock to stun Australia and win Commonwealth gold in the women’s hockey final. Follow all the action throughout the evening below:

Triathlon’s healthy rivalry ready to light up the ‘friendly Games’

There’s no rancour between Georgia Taylor-Brown and Flora Duffy, a healthy rivalry befitting the first medal event of the ‘friendly Games.’

Triathletes don’t talk trash but there will be no quarter given as the world’s top two women do battle at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in the bucolic surrounds of Sutton Park.

That they are the top two is beyond contention. The Bermudan won gold and the English star silver at the Tokyo Olympics and that is where they stand in the triathlon world rankings.

Duffy has won Bermuda’s first - well, everything really - making sporting history every time she swims, bikes, and runs for the archipelago, population 64,000.

The 34-year-old has never been to Birmingham in her life but attended Mount Kelly boarding school in Tavistock, Devon.

Georgia Taylor-Brown, who also won an individual silver medal in Tokyo, was hoping to emulate Yee later on Friday in the women’s event.

Yee described his win as “my greatest achievement ever”, adding to BBC Sport: “It’s the first time I’ve been able to race in front of my parents for a long time at a major Games.

Made in Birmingham

The Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham produces 40% of all jewellery in the UK – the highest concentration in Europe.

The Commonwealth gold, silver and bronze medals have been made there, as were the Wimbledon tennis men’s and ladies’ singles trophies.

Australia win by three wickets! They’ve beaten India in the opening fixture at Edgbaston.

It looked highly unlikely that they could turn around a poor start to their chase but a delightful unbeaten 50 from Ash Gardner has seen the world champions home.

Incredible scenes at Edgbaston.

The most sustainable Commonwealth Games?

Birmingham 2022 is hoping to be the most sustainable Commonwealth Games ever. The central narrative of the games is a re-use and recycle approach to the venues and accommodation.

72 tiny forests have been planted (one for each nation and territory competing at the Games) in urban areas to support biodiversity and green spaces.

Spectators are also being encouraged to use public transport with everyone having access to two 30 minute rides with West Midlands cycle hire per day during the Games.

After an incredibly poor start to their inning, world champions Australia have recovered. Halfway through the run chase the Aussies were 66-5 but a 50-partnerhsip between Grace Harris and Ash Gardner has steadied the ship.
