A thrilling penultimate day at Birmingham 2022 has delivered more action to this thoroughly entertaining Commonwealth Games, with 45 gold medals in total set to be dished out by the end of the evening.

Tonight was all about Laura Muir, and the Scotland star produced a brilliant kick to win gold in the women’s 1500m final, adding to her 800m bronze from the previous evening. Later, a wide-open men’s 800m final, was won by Kenya’s Wyclife Kinyamal ahead of Australia’s Peter Bol, with England’s Ben Pattison taking bronze.

Eilish McColgan added to her 10,000m gold with a gutsy silver in the 5,000m and there was further joy as England’s women wrapped up the action at the Alexander Stadium with a dramatic gold in the 4x400m final. It was short lived, however, after the team was disqualified following a lane infringment.

Earlier, home-town hero Matt Hudson-Smith was left disappointed when forced to settle for silver in the men’s 400m, while Victoria Ohuruogu was more upbeat, grabbing a silver in the women’s 400m final. There was drama in the 4x100m relay finals, with England men and Nigeria women prevailing.

In the afternoon, a dramatic men’s cycling road race saw Geraint Thomas fall just short with a late push to break the lead group, leaving New Zealand’s Aaron Gate to sprint clear and win a fourth gold at these Games. And in the result of the day, England pulled off a shock to stun Australia and win Commonwealth gold in the women’s hockey final. Follow all the action throughout the evening below:

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Triathlon

In the men’s triathlon earlier today New Zealand’s Hayden Wilde was given a 10-second penalty because his helmet wasn’t properly left in the plastic container next to the bike rack.

Georgia Taylor-Brown and Flora Duffy both arrive at the second trasition and will be absolutely certain that their transitions are perfect.

Taylor-Brown takes longer to switch to the running shoes and Duffy ekes out a couple of seconds as she head off in the lead.

Duffy and Taylor-Brown continue to alternate at the front of the race. They’ve got one more lap of Sutton Coldfield to go before a 5km race to the end of the course.

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Boxing

England’s Lewis Richardson defeated Wales’ Harris Khan by unanimous decision to progress to the last 16 in the men’s middleweight division.

The Colchester-born boxer, who picked up a silver medal at this year’s European Championships, opened up a sizeable advantage in the opening two rounds and Khan’s chances were not helped after he picked up an official warning from the referee in the second round which saw him deducted a point.

Richardson, one of the favourites to win gold, will now face Uganda’s Yusuf Nkobeza on Sunday for a place in the quarter-finals.

Scotland’s Beth Potter leads the way out of the water and strings together a good transition onto the bike. Bermuda’s Flora Duffy exits the lake in second place with England’s Georgia Taylor-Brown in third.

Potter is the first onto the bike course with a pack of four women chasing her down.

Ashleigh Gardner rescues Commonwealth Games favourites Australia against India

Ashleigh Gardner rescued gold medal favourites Australia against India as women’s T20 cricket made its Commonwealth Games debut at Edgbaston on Friday.

The reigning 20 and 50-over world champions’ top order had initially faltered in reply to India’s 154 for eight, with Alyssa Healy and Meg Lanning among those to lose their wickets cheaply.

But Gardner steadied Australia with an unbeaten 52 off 35 balls, as leg-spinner Alana King hit the winning runs off Deepti Sharma to seal a three-wicket win with an over to spare.

Edgbaston looked to be at around 50 per cent of its 25,000 capacity for an attractive opening match between 2020’s T20 World Cup finalists.

Alex Yee took home the gold for England this morning in the men’s triathlon and Georgia Taylor-Brown is getting her event underway.

The competitors leap into the water in Sutton Park for the first of the three disciplines. The course is favourable to the stronger cyclists and runners so it isn’t necessary to lead the way coming out of the water.
