Ashley McKenzie describes how he won judo gold medal at the Commonwealth Games

A thrilling penultimate day at Birmingham 2022 has delivered more action to this thoroughly entertaining Commonwealth Games, with 45 gold medals in total set to be dished out by the end of the evening.

Tonight was all about Laura Muir, and the Scotland star produced a brilliant kick to win gold in the women’s 1500m final, adding to her 800m bronze from the previous evening. Later, a wide-open men’s 800m final, was won by Kenya’s Wyclife Kinyamal ahead of Australia’s Peter Bol, with England’s Ben Pattison taking bronze.

Eilish McColgan added to her 10,000m gold with a gutsy silver in the 5,000m and there was further joy as England’s women wrapped up the action at the Alexander Stadium with a dramatic gold in the 4x400m final. It was short lived, however, after the team was disqualified following a lane infringment.

Earlier, home-town hero Matt Hudson-Smith was left disappointed when forced to settle for silver in the men’s 400m, while Victoria Ohuruogu was more upbeat, grabbing a silver in the women’s 400m final. There was drama in the 4x100m relay finals, with England men and Nigeria women prevailing.

In the afternoon, a dramatic men’s cycling road race saw Geraint Thomas fall just short with a late push to break the lead group, leaving New Zealand’s Aaron Gate to sprint clear and win a fourth gold at these Games. And in the result of the day, England pulled off a shock to stun Australia and win Commonwealth gold in the women’s hockey final. Follow all the action throughout the evening below:

Men’s decathlon starts with 100m

It was multi-discipline gold for Katarina Johnson-Thompson in the heptathlon last night - now it is time to see how the men fare in the decathlon. It’s another small field, with just eight athletes entered, including three Australians and England’s Harry Kendall.

Eight athletes means a single heat - Grenada’s Lindon Victor is the fastest in the field on paper...

Women’s time trial begins road cycling events

Right, the first riders are just rolling off the start ramp in the first road cycling event of the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The women’s time trial begins proceedings, and it’s a reasonably strong field despite some late withdrawals, including Ashleigh Moolman Pasio, the veteran South African who enjoyed a good first Tour de France Femmes for the strong SD Worx team.

Grace Brown is another coming off of the TDFF, so we will have to see how strong her legs remain after a rigorous eight days in France, but the Australian time trial champion finished fourth at the Olympics last year and should be right up there. England’s Joscelin Lowden is the British champion in the discipline and was the top finisher at the Worlds last year from a Commonwealth nation (eighth), but the extremely talented Anna Henderson is probably the best hope of a home gold, while Anna Shackley (Scotland) has shown signs of real promise on the road this season.

It’s a 28.8km course for the women, starting and finishing in Wolverhampton’s West Park.

All to play for at NEC Arena

Just a point in it! It’s mighty tight between Jamaica and Australia, with the Australians a point ahead at the close of the second quarter.

It’s now 33-32 early in the third, but it feels like that contest might be going right down to the wire.

Australia and Jamaica meet in big netball clash

Australia and Jamaica are two of the heavyweight netball nations, currently ranked first and fourth in the world, and enter their meeting this morning level on points at the top of Pool A. Their encounter, then, will decide who tops the group, with Jamaica into an early 6-3 lead with just less than ten minutes left of the first quarter.

In the other pool, England and New Zealand (nations two and three in the current world rankings) similarly vie for top spot later at the NEC Arena.

Eilish McColgan’s proud evening

There has been plenty said and written about the importance of the Commonwealth Games during the course of Birmingham 2022, but Eilish McColgan certainly showed what it means on the podium last night, fighting back the tears as she stood proudly for “Flower of Scotland” after a remarkable 10,000m triumph.

Commonwealth Games Day Seven

There’s plenty more happening, too. There are four para-powerlifting golds (two for men, two for women) up for grabs at the NEC, where Scotland’s Micky Yule will hope to better two fourth-placed finishes in the men’s heavyweight class at the last two Commonwealth Games.

Cricket is nearing the semi-final stage with the last two group matches to be played at Edgbaston today - can New Zealand beat England, who have had captain Heather Knight ruled out for the remainder of the competition, to top Group B? The loser of today’s game (from 18.00 BST) will face Australia in the last four.

There’s a clash of home nations on the hockey pitch as Wales and England’s women meet from 11.00 BST.

Commonwealth Games 2022: Diving takes over from swimming

We are swapping pools at the Sandwell Aquatics Centre today, with the swimming events all tied up and the divers jumping, twisting and somersaulting their way into the fray. There are two medals to be awarded today: Jack Laugher of England is seeking a third consecutive 1m springboard crown to continue his fine career, while Andrea Spendolni-Sirieix is one of British diving’s best platform prospects. She bids for a medal off the high board this evening in what looks to be a reasonably open field.
