Things are shaping up rather nicely in the women’s time trial in Wolverhampton, with Grace Brown of Australia, as expected, fastest through the first time check. But it is far from done - pacing will be key on a course of enough length to really test the legs and pacing acumen of the riders, and England’s Anna Henderson is only five seconds back at that first time check. Henderson has had a really promising couple of seasons since joining Jumbo-Visma, beating a strong field to win a quick prologue at the Festival Elsy Jacobs and recording a seventh at the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad in the spring.

Becky Storrie of the Isle of Man, a great cycling hotbed, has had an excellent ride, too - she’s just completed the course in the fastest time so far (41:53.49) and was fourth fastest at the first time check. She might just be in the medal mix.

Back to the athletics track, and the women’s 200m has begun with five heats.

Olympic silver medallist Christine Mbomba, who missed the World Championships due to injury, took the first of them in a time of 23.20 seconds, while India’s Hima Das, more known as a 400m runner, qualified fastest from Heat Two.
