Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Trump-backed Ohio Senate candidate JD Vance was ridiculed by his opponent last night for “kissing ass” to get the former president’s endorsement.

In a televised debate, Mr Vance’s Democratic opponent Tim Ryan quoted Mr Trump himself describing how Mr Vance had gone about securing his support.

Accusing Mr Vance of a “lack of courage,” Mr Ryan declared: “I’m from Ohio I don’t kiss anyone’s ass like him. Ohio needs an ass-kicker, not an ass-kisser.”

Meanwhile, an extract from an upcoming book on the GOP’s support for Mr Trump has revealed new details of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s infamous call with Mr Trump during the January 6 Capitol attack.

According to Politico, when Mr Trump told Mr McCarthy that the people storming the building were “more upset” than his party about the supposed theft of the election, Mr McCarthy responded: “More upset? They’re trying to f***ing kill me!”

How will the GOP persuade Trump supporters in Georgia to vote?

On a crisp fall morning, eager volunteers fanned out in the leafy suburban Atlanta neighborhood to knock on doors, trying to persuade reluctant and skeptical conservatives to register to vote in next month’s midterm elections.

It’s painstaking work anywhere, but especially pivotal in battleground Georgia, as Donald Trump’s lies of a rigged 2020 election have created a new constituency of election deniers -- some wary their votes won’t be counted in November.

Everything we’ve learned from the Oath Keepers' seditious conspiracy trial so far

Jurors in Washington DC will determine whether the leader of a far-right anti-government militia and four others tied to the group are guilty of seditious conspiracy after plotting an attempt to violently disrupt Congress on 6 January, 2021.

Stewart Rhodes and four other defendants have pleaded not guilty to the charges against them, while federal prosecutors argue that the Oath Keepers spent weeks organising their members and associates for an “attack” fuelled by baseless conspiracy theories that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from Donald Trump.

Here’s what we have learned so far:

Jan 6: Oath Keepers trial reveals dozens of Jan 6 messages as members stormed Capitol

While Oath Keepers leader Stewart Rhodes grew frustrated with Donald Trump’s response to the 2020 presidential election, members of the far-right anti-government group roamed the US Capitol grounds, waiting for the president’s call to take up arms against the government.

During the group’s trial on charges of seditious conspiracy, federal prosecutors and FBI investigators revealed the member’s coordinated movements and explicit calls for violence in message after message, video after video, as a mob stormed the Capitol on 6 January, 2021.

Alex Woodward reports.

Texas Rally: Bobb lauds hand-counting of votes

Speaking on RSBN, Trump lawyer Christina Bobb says that Cochise County in Arizona has indicated that they will hand-count ballots in the midterms and have signed up enough volunteers to do so.

She is unhappy because she says that Katie Hobbs, secretary of state and Democrat candidate for governor, has said she will sue for them to use the voting machines.

Ms Bobb is also outraged that Arizona’s Republican attorney sent a referral to the FBI for tax evasion for the organisation behind the 2000 Mules election fraud movie of which Donald Trump is such a fan.
