Trump news – live: Vance slated for ‘kissing Trump’s ass’ as new details of McCarthy’s Jan 6 call emerge

Former president’s chosen Ohio Senate candidate was once among his most aggressive critics

Tim Ryan calls JD Vance an ‘ass-kisser’ after Trump remarks

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Trump-backed Ohio Senate candidate JD Vance was ridiculed by his opponent last night for “kissing ass” to get the former president’s endorsement.

In a televised debate, Mr Vance’s Democratic opponent Tim Ryan quoted Mr Trump himself describing how Mr Vance had gone about securing his support.

Accusing Mr Vance of a “lack of courage,” Mr Ryan declared: “I’m from Ohio I don’t kiss anyone’s ass like him. Ohio needs an ass-kicker, not an ass-kisser.”

Meanwhile, an extract from an upcoming book on the GOP’s support for Mr Trump has revealed new details of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s infamous call with Mr Trump during the January 6 Capitol attack.

According to Politico, when Mr Trump told Mr McCarthy that the people storming the building were “more upset” than his party about the supposed theft of the election, Mr McCarthy responded: “More upset? They’re trying to f***ing kill me!”

Will Trump testify before the Jan 6 committee?

Will former President Donald Trump obey the subpoena issued by the January 6 committee and appear in person to testify about his role at the centre of the Capitol riot?

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi doesn’t think so.

“I don’t think he’s man enough to show up,” she said on MSNBC on Sunday morning.

Trump wants Roe v Wade ‘leaker’ and reporters who published draft opinion jailed

Donald Trump suggested that a person who leaked a draft of a US Supreme Court opinion to overturn Roe v Wade, as well as the journalists who published it, should be imprisoned, despite not breaking any laws.

The former president suggested that publishers should be threatened with the possibility of being raped in prison in an effort to draw out the “leaker” for a violation that does not exist.

Alex Woodward reports.

QAnon finger salute returns at Texas rally

As the music begins towards the end of the former president’s remarks, members of the crowd immediately, creepily, raise a finger in a salute to QAnon.

Here’s some of our previous coverage of this disturbing, cultish behaviour.

‘It’s a disgrace’: Trump moans about Mar-a-Lago raid

Trump’s Robstown rally: Roe leak, Pulitzer, Jan 6 subpoena

Donald Trump took to the stage last night in Robstown, Texas, at the latest of his “Save America” rallies. Per usual, his rambling speech was punctuated with a list of grievances about how unjust it is that he has to face the legal ramifications of his actions.

He also complained about the inability to find the person who leaked the Supreme Court decision on Roe v Wade in as crass a way as you can — with a “joke” about prison rape.

Mr Trump also announced he was suing the Pulitzer Organization for giving an award to coverage of the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, while giving his own recommendations for who should receive a Pulitzer Prize.

And obviously, he complained that the “crooked” January 6 committee subpoenaed him to answer questions about his role at the centre of the efforts to overturn the 2020 election by attacking Congress.

Pollster warns of post-midterm ‘civil war’ if voters don’t accept election results

With less than three weeks to go until voters have their say in the midterms, a pollster is warning of a potential “civil war” if Maga candidates don’t accept the results.

Republican pollster Frank Luntz made his ominous warnings while appearing on Friday morning’s Morning Joe, where he predicted that the fallout from the midterms could have serious repercussions if politicians lose in states where candidates have been known to traffic in election-denying conspiracies.

The GOP analyst also speculated that voters seem to be disenfranchised by candidates who they put their faith in at the ballot box, but who seem to “become part of the system” once elected.

Johanna Chisholm reports.

ICYMI: Trump officially subpoenaed in Jan 6 committee probe for being at the ‘center’ of Capitol attack

The House January 6 select committee has formally issued a subpoena to compel former president Donald Trump to produce documents by 4 November and appear to give evidence in a sworn deposition before the panel on 14 November, setting up a confrontation between the twice-impeached ex-president and the nine-member panel with just months to go before its mandate expires in January.

In a letter to the former president, select committee chairman Bennie Thompson and vice-chair Liz Cheney said the panel had “assembled overwhelming evidence” that Mr Trump “personally orchestrated and oversaw a multi-part effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election and to obstruct the peaceful transfer of power”.

Andrew Feinberg has the details.

Republican hopefuls turn to Pence to broaden appeal before midterms

In Donald Trump‘s assessment, Mike Pence “committed political suicide” on Jan. 6, 2021.

By refusing to go along with the then-president’s unconstitutional push to overturn the results of the 2020 election, Pence became a leading target of Trump’s wrath and a pariah in many Republican circles.

But the final weeks of this year’s intensely competitive midterm elections suggest that the former vice president’s fortunes have shifted as he lays the groundwork for his own potential 2024 White House campaign. The man who was booed last year at a conservative conference is now an in-demand draw for Republican candidates, including some who spent their primaries obsessively courting Trump’s endorsement, in part by parroting his election lies.

Lindsey Graham asks Supreme Court to block his Georgia Trump election fraud testimony

Lindsey Graham has filed an emergency request asking the US Supreme Court to block a grand jury subpoena for his testimony in a Georgia probe of Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in that state.

A federal appeals court stood with a lower-court decision on 20 October and ruled that the Republican senator “failed to demonstrate that he is likely to succeed” in his attempts to prevent his appearance before a Fulton County special grand jury.

The South Carolina senator then appealed to the nation’s high court on 21 October.

Alex Woodward has the details.

Trump claims he owns White House pardon requests and immigration records

Former president Donald Trump has told the New York judge overseeing a review of documents seized from his Florida property that 15 documents pertaining to pardon requests and immigration policy matters belong to him and should be treated as personal records.

Per a review of the court filings by The Independent, most of the documents at issue pertain to clemency requests made when Mr Trump was still president and had the authority to grant pardons for federal crimes. Two of them are related to his former administration’s immigration policy, and another is a letter from someone who worked at a US service academy.

Andrew Feinberg reports.
