At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The mob was just "58 steps away" as Congress members fled, hid, or put on gas moments before the mob poured through the hallways of the Senate and House chambers.

Day two of Donald Trump's impeachment heard how close Mike Pence was to being "executed" and Nancy Pelosi came to being "murdered" before they were evacuated from the Capitol building to a safe location.

Never before seen security footage showed Republicans and Democrats alike running for their lives, with Mitt Romney and Chuck Schumer shown on camera fleeing through corridors to find a safe place to hide.

Julian Castro said Trump "left them for dead" as Trump's provocations of a "stolen election" added fuel to the fire of the riots.

House managers began the second day the impeachment trial with Donald Trump's own words as they showed tweet after tweet and played video after video of the ex-president's messaging to supporters that threw "kerosene on the flames".

Democrats Madeline Dean, Ted Lieu, Jamie Raskin, Eric Swalwell and Stacey Plaskett walked Senators through a forensic retelling of the timeline to show how Trump actively "helped plan" the march on the Capitol.

The trial heard the Proud Boys followed Trump's calls to "stand back and stand by" while videos from the Save America Rally showed supporters yelling "invade the Capitol".

Dean broke down in tears as she remembered the moment rioters banged on the House chamber door: "For the first time in more than 200 years, the seat of our government was ransacked on our watch.”

The trial is adjourned until Thursday.

Hillary Clinton weighs in with blistering take on Donald Trump impeachment

Hillary Clinton has weighed in on Donald Trump’s impeachment trial, with a blistering take on the proceedings.

In a post on Twitter on Wednesday, the former secretary of state hit out at Republican senators who supported Mr Trump's baseless election fraud claims ahead of the riot on 6 January.

“If Senate Republicans fail to convict Donald Trump, it won't be because the facts were with him or his lawyers mounted a competent defence,” she said.

“It will be because the jury includes his co-conspirators.”

The post quickly went viral on the platform, amassing more than 85,000 likes and 15,000 retweets in the hours after it was posted.

DC officer injured in Capitol riot speaks out

A Washington DC police officer who was crushed by a far-right mob during the insurrection at the US Capitol earlier this month has said that he would do it all again to protect US democracy.

“If it wasn’t my job I would’ve done that for free,” Officer Daniel Hodges said in an interview with NBC. “It was absolutely my pleasure to crush a white nationalist insurrection … We’ll do it as many times as it takes."

On 6 January, Officer Hodges responded to a radio call for back-up as pro-Trump rioters breached the Capitol building during a joint session of Congress to certify the 2020 election results which the president has sought to overturn.

Alex Woodward has the story.

‘Medieval battle scene’: Videos of officers describing Capitol rioters played at trial

“It looked like a Medieval battle scene, some of the most brutal combat I’ve ever encountered,” said Mike Fanone.

“At one point I got tased, people were yelling out ‘we got one we got one’.”

Officer Christina Laury, who protected the front Capitol entrance, said people were beating them with metal poles.

“They were spraying them with bear mace, I mean they did everything in their power to not let those people in. And this was going on for hours,” she says.

Officer Daniel Hodges was trapped between two doors. He said he was hit in the head by a “huge metal object”.

“I was also knocked down, the medical mask I was wearing at the time got pulled up over my eyes so I was on the ground and blinded and they started just attacking me from all sides,” he says.

Senate leader Chuck Schumer seen running for his life in new security footage

“In this new video you see leader Schumer walking up a ramp, going up the ramp with his detail, he’ll soon go out of view,” says Eric Swalwell.

“Seconds later they return and run down the hallway, and officers immediately shut the door and use their bodies to keep them safe.”

Senators were just ’58 steps away’ from the mob

“As you were moving through that hallway, I paced it off, you were just 58 steps away from where the mob was amassing and where police were rushing to stop them,” says Eric Swalwell.

“You can see how the Capitol police created a line and blocked the hallway with their bodies to prevent rioters at the end of the hall from reaching you, and your staff.”

'Where are you Nancy?': Audio of rioters and Pelosi's staffers from Capitol riot revealed at impeachment trial

The Independent's Graig Graziosi has more on the mob coming for Nancy Pelosi:

The Democratic impeachment managers introduced frightening new footage into Donald Trump's trial in the Senate showing a man wandering the halls and calling out for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in a threatening manner.

In the video, a man can be seen wandering down the halls of the Capitol, calling out to Ms Pelosi in a sing-song way.

"Where are you, Nancy?" the cameraman calls out. "Oh Nancy, we're looking for you!"

The intonation of the call is clearly influenced by the cliche mocking tone often associated with killers in horror movies calling out to their victims.

The video was part of the impeachment managers' room-by-room examination of the insurrection, which included several videos.
