Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

It is heartbreak for England. Football is not coming home.

The Three Lions' World Cup dream has come to an end after the side were beaten 2-1 after a nail-biting 30-minute extra-time.

Kieran Trippier's 5th-minute free-kick catapulted England into the lead and gave the squad the confidence they needed to reach the final.

But it all came crashing down after Ivan Perisic's equaliser took the game to extra-time where Mario Mandzukic's 109th-minute strike took them into the final.

Despite the blood, the sweat, the tears, England still have to face Belgium on Saturday to secure third place, while Croatia will stay in Moscow for the final against Les Bleus.

Stick with us people and follow all the live action below

Shappi Khorsandi: We have spotted one of our neighbours isn't watching the football. We are descending in their house Simpson's style with pickaxes.

Mark Steel: We've won more matches in this tournament by being 1-1 after 90 minutes, than by winning 1-0, so that Croatia equaliser has done us a favour.

Will Gore: So, I hear Danny Rose has come on. Seems to be he is just what we blooming well need...

Shappi Khorsandi: Bluebell looks like I feel

Mark Steel: Anyone who didn't shout 'oh f*****g arse aaaa' when that was saved on the line isn't human.

Mark Steel: Magnificent levels of concentration holding up here.

Shappi Khorsandi: Man. That would have hurt but he needed to do what he needed to do.

jessica.morgan11 July 2018 21:15

Mark Steel: The rotation of the internal organs, the dry taste in the mouth, the inability to speak or to function, the trance and the squeaks and squeals we're all undergoing, are all because this is a magnificent spectacle.
