From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Britain’s most beloved baking show is finally back! Bake Off returned with a batch of new contestants hoping to win over Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith’s taste buds.

The second series to air on Channel 4 kicked off with biscuit week and saw the 12 newcomers tasked with creating a set of traditional biscuits inspired by something personal to them. A gentle enough start – unlike the technical challenge, which featured some devilishly tricky marshmallow-making as the new dozen were asked to make wagon wheels.

Following a difficult showstopper that saw the bakers make selfie biscuits, France's own Manon was voted star baker, while Imelda was voted out (narrowly losing to Terry).

The Independent live-blogged along all the action from the Berkshire-based tent below. Catch up on everything that happened below – please give the live-blog a moment to load.

The Independent recently ran through everything we learnt from a preview screening of the first episode, also including some tantalising snippets of news about the upcoming series from Prue and Paul. (Spoiler: Sandi Toksvig and Noel Fielding are back and better than ever.)

You can also learn more about each of the new contestants by flicking through the below gallery.

Bake Off airs Tuesday on Channel 4 at 8pm.

Terry's not doing so great, again! And Manon's storming forward again. She's annoyingly confident and good. Already going odd her. Feelings I do not have for our presenters, Noel and Sandi, who are on fine form this evening.

Oh Terry. The producers are really making us feel bad for the moustached man. I feel like they're being misleading. Because Imelda's seaside selfie is not going well, at all. And the tense music's beginning! Oof, my heart rate.

Kim-Joy's really going for an impressionist selfie. Enjoying her painting. And Imelda looks terrifying in her selfie. Ruby, meanwhile, doesn't look like anything at all...

Andrew Buncombe28 August 2018 20:54

The innuendo has finally arrived! "What are you holding... I thought it was something else!" It certainly does, Kim-Joy.

  ↵Poor Terry...

Andrew Buncombe28 August 2018 20:59

Judgement time. "Looks like a massive prawn," Paul says of Dan's baby. That's a nice way of putting it, Mr Hollywood, who does not degrade himself to innuendo.

Luke's Vegas bake. Looks like you're safely through. And Antony's pulled it back after that disastrous technical. Rahul's done a stunning job, giving a great answer for not having stubble. You could feel Paul almost going for the handshake... but alas, not today.

Karen's glasses are amazing.

Andrew Buncombe28 August 2018 21:03

Imelda has had another shocker. And Ruby's gone from front runner to back of the pack thanks to an unfinished London marathon. Worst of all, her biscuits are dry!

Andrew Buncombe28 August 2018 21:04

Maron's giving a very creepy look as they eat her biscuit. Has she done something to it? Has she poisoned them?
