Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The Emmy nominations for 2019 were announced today in Hollywood, with Game of Thrones, Better Call Saul, Chernobyl and Fleabag receiving attention from voters.

Ken Jeong and The Good Place star D’Arcy Carden announced the names of the drama, comedy and limited run shows that’ll duke it out come September.

Making things more exciting was the fact that an alarming number of heavyweights - including The Handmaid's Tale and The Crown - were exempt from contention this year.

You can find a full list of nominations here.

Follow along with all the live updates from this year’s nominations as they were announced below.

The 71st Primetime Emmy Awards will air 22 September at about 1am UK time.

Time for the supporting categories! Actress in a Drama is essentially going to be a Game of Thrones duel - we're going to predict Lena Headey (for all 15 minutes of her season eight screen time) aaaaaand... Sophie Turner (it's either going to be her or Maisie Williams).

The real nomination we're hoping for here is Rhea Seehorn who might FINALLY get nominated for Better Call Saul. It is time.

Fun fact: Emmy voters rarely give out back-to-back Best Supporting Actor wins, so those hoping for a Peter Dinklage victory might be disappointed; the Thrones star won last year. A nomination, though, is guaranteed.

This certainly paves the way for Nikolaj Coster-Waldau to earn a second Emmy nomination for the role of Jaime Lannister.

Back to Comedy. Supporting Actress looks set to include reigning champ Alex Borstein - not for the voice of Lois Griffin, but for her role in The Marvellous Mrs Maisel - and the Saturday Night Live usuals ('allo 'allo, Kate McKinnon).

Considering the entire world now loves Olivia Colman, could she get named for her role of the evil godmother in Fleabag - a character the entire world hates?

Bit of a weaker list for Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, but one that could become interesting. We're predicting a duke out between four people from two different shows: Tony Hale and Timothy Simons for the final season of Veep and Barry actors Bill Hader (who won last year) and Anthony Carrigan. We shall see.

Well, as there is no supporting categories for Limited Series, that's our breakdown completed. 20 minutes left to go until they name completely different people rendering my entire day in vain.

Those were the days.

The video is live... three minutes to go!
