At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. The actor, who played Jaime Lannister in all eight seasons, made an appearance at fan convention Con of Thrones where he defended showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss from the “silly” response to the series finale.
He also referenced the fan petition to remake the finale season, which received one million signatures.
“We’re so lucky to be part of a show where people care so much about it that you also get upset when it doesn’t go the way you want it to,” he said. ”And that’s fantastic, and I love it, and I love that there was an online petition to have it rewritten.”
He continued: “The only thing I’ll say is that for anyone to imagine or to think that the two creators of this show are not the most passionate, the greatest, the most invested of all, and to for a second think that they didn’t spend the last 10 years thinking about how they were gonna end it, is kinda silly. And also know that they too read the comments.
He went on to praise the “thousands” who “worked [their] a***s off to make the best show we could for the ending”.
Coster-Waldau made no mention of his character’s underwhelming death scene with Cersei Lannister, which Lena Headey herself has said she was “gutted” about. She also revealed further disappointment over a crucial Cersei scene being scrapped from the show.
Just last week, George RR Martin – author of the A Song of Ice and Fire book series – revealed key details about the Westeros fans will see in the forthcoming prequel series, which stars Naomi Watts.
