New tantalising details about the Game of Thrones prequel series have been revealed by George RR Martin.

The only thing fans knew so far was that the series would be set thousands of years before events seen in the HBO show – and sure enough, new episodes will show off a very different version of Westeros.

So, what did Martin specifically reveal about the forthcoming series to Entertainment Weekly?

Whereas Thrones had seven kingdoms to deal with, the prequel will be set in a time where Westeros was comprised of 100 “petty” kingdoms.

Will recognisable family names reside in these areas? Just Starks, according to Martin who confirmed that the prequel series (at first, anyhow) will be a Lannister free affair.

There’ll also be no dragons – but there will be direwolves, white walkers and... mammoths.

The author also described the series, which will star Naomi Watts, Naomi Ackie and Denise Gough, as an “ensemble” piece.

Martin also stated that the show’s title was yet to be confirmed. He lobbied support once again for The Long Night, but said the fact that Game of Thrones season eight’s third episode was given that same name complicated matters. He did suggest the series could eventually be titled The Longest Night, though. “[That’s] a variant I wouldn’t mind,” he said.

Earlier this year, Richard Madden – who played Robb Stark – revealed he was glad to be one of the earlier stars to leave the show.
