“Tina Turner, the ‘Queen of Rock’n’Roll’ has died peacefully today at the age of 83 after a long illness in her home in Kusnacht near Zurich, Switzerland,” her publicist said in a statement.
“With her, the world loses a music legend and a role model.”
The singer rose to prominence performing with her husband Ike Turner in the 1960s before overcoming his violent, abusive behaviour to go on to become a chart-topping solo artist.
Turner earned a legion of fans for her riveting live performances, and was best known for songs such as “Private Dancer”, “The Best”, “What’s Love Got to Do With It” and “Proud Mary”.
Born Anna Mae Bullock on 26 November, 1939, in Nutbush, Tennessee, Turner would go on to sell more than 180 million albums and won 12 Grammy Awards.
Turner was diagnosed with intestinal cancer in 2016 and received a kidney transplant in 2017.
Stars of the entertainment world including Mick Jagger, Bryan Adams, Rosario Dawson, Paloma Faith and Naomi Campbell paid tribute to the iconic singer.

Cher recalls final moments with ‘really sick’ yet ‘happy’ Tina Turner before her death aged 83
Cher has remembered how “happy” Tina Turner was in her final moments, despite being “really sick”.
On the day of Turner’s death, Wednesday (24 May), Cher appeared on MSNBC to reflect on their close friendship. The two performed duets together in the Seventies on Cher’s variety shows.
“I started going to visit her because I thought, ‘I need to put this time into our friendship, so she knows we haven’t forgotten her,’” the “Believe” singer explained.

West End theatres to dim lights in honour of Tina Turner
Tonight (25 May) at 7pm, West End theatres will dim their lights for two minutes in honour of global sensation Tina Turner.
Hannah Essex, co-Chief Executive of the Society of London Theatre and UK Theatre, said in a statement: “The theatre world pays tribute to the immense talent and impact of Tina Turner.
“She has inspired countless generations through not only her pioneering music career, but her ability to break down barriers in the face of adversity. She will be greatly missed.”
Why Tina Turner almost missed out on the GoldenEye theme
Throughout her lengthy and successful musical career, Turner released hit records as both a solo performer, and with her ex-husband Ike Turner.
In 1995, she recorded one of her best-known songs, the titular theme for GoldenEye, Pierce Brosnan’s first outing as 007 agent Bond.
However, Turner very nearly wasn’t the voice of “GoldenEye”, after originally dismissing a “really rough” demo sent to her by the track’s songwriters, U2’s Bono and The Edge.
