Ewan McGregor is set to return to Star Wars in his very own Obi-Wan Kenobi TV show.

The Scottish actor has made no secret of his wish to reprise the role after playing him in the prequel trilogy, but it’s looking more likely than ever following the news that Disney will release a series on its high-profile streaming service, which launches on 12 November.

It was previously reported that the character, played by Alec Guinness in the original trilogy, would be getting his own film, but following the disappointing box office performance of Solo, the studio has decided to proceed with a project on the small screen.

The Mandalorian, which comes from from The Lion King director Jon Favreau, will be one of the streaming service’s big new shows to be set in the Star Wars universe. Plans have also been unveiled to release an untitled spinoff focused on Diego Luna’s Rogue One character Cassian Andor.

McGregor was last seen as Kenobi in 2005 film Revenge of the Sith. The actor will next be seen in The Shining sequel Doctor Sleep, in which he plays an adult version of Danny Torrance.

This December will see the release of Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker.

Several fan theories, including an intriguing one about Last Jedi villain Snoke, are currently doing the round about what could happen in the JJ Abrams film.

Another relates to a brand new character played by Keri Russell and her potential link to Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), a connection that could unlock several clues of what to expect in the film that's been described as “mind-blowing”.

Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker is released on 16 December.
