From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Oscar-winning actress Marcia Gay Harden is the latest star to join the Fifty Shades of Grey cast after singer Rita Ora was confirmed for the film earlier this week.

The Miller’s Crossing and Into The Wild star will play billionaire Christian Grey’s adoptive mother, Dr Grace Trevelyan Fray while Ora will act as his sister, Mia. Grey’s father, Carrick Grey, is reportedly yet to be cast.

Gay Harden, 54, won an Academy Award in 2001 for her supporting role in biopic Pollock and has recently finished work on Woody Allen’s Magic In The Moonlight.

Filming has begun on the multi-million pound film, with Jamie Dornan in the lead role as Grey with Dakota Johnson in her first major film appearance as Anastacia Steele, a college student infatuated by the businessman’s charisma.

The storyline follows the destructive, sexually-charged relationship between Grey and Steele.

Fifty Shades of Grey is due for general release on Valentine’s Day weekend 2015 after production was delayed when the original Christian Grey actor Charlie Hunnam pulled out.

The E L James trilogy of erotic novels has sold over 70 million copies globally and is one of the fastest-selling book series in history. Directors competed for the film rights, with actor Mark Wahlberg revealing last month that he wanted to produce and cast Brad Pitt in the lead.
