UK braces for ‘disruptive snow’, ice and cold temperatures

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The UK has been hit with travel chaos and school closures with up to 15cm of snow expected to fall in some parts of the country.

Motorists are facing disruption and train services have been cancelled as the Met Office issued three yellow weather alerts for snow and ice covering much of northern England.

National Highways warned of snow disruption for the North east and North west until 10am on Tuesday - with 10-15cm expected to fall on some motorways.

Meanwhile, National Rail warned the cold climate would impact various routes on the Northern Rail until at least 2pm on Tuesday.

So far some 130 schools in Powys, Flintshire, Denbighshire and Wrexham have reported that they will be shut today.

In the England, including places like Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Warwickshire, around 40 schools have closed so far.

A yellow snow and ice warning is currently in place until 10am on Tuesday covering Northern Ireland.

Another yellow alert is in place until 10am on Wednesday, covering areas in Scotland, and a third lasts until 11am on Tuesday covering areas in the East Midlands, Yorkshire and the north of England.

On Monday morning, London saw snowfall as commuters made their way to work.

Rail: Long delays and cancellations due to severe weather

Rail services in the East Midlands and North of England, as well as North Wales, have been hit by adverse weather.

Northern Trains has reduced services across the Pennines, with West Yorkshire particularly affected.

Fewer trains are running between Hebden Bridge and Halifax, and links from Halifax to Hull are starting at Bradford Interchange.

In Cumbria, flooding in the Ulverston area means that trains from Manchester airport via Lancaster to Barrow-in-Furness are being delayed.

No trains are running between Nottingham and Worksop, with disruption expected until 12 noon. Rail replacement buses “have been sourced” but delays of up to an hour are expected.

No trains will run at all on Tuesday between Llandudno and Blaenau Ffestiniog due to “severe weather”. Buses are running instead.

AA warns against online hacks for clearing ice

The AA has urged drivers not to throw boiling hot water over their icy windscreen, but instead brush snow off, scrape the ice and switch on the engine to start the heaters.

“Most people know not to use boiling water on their windscreen, with only 2 per cent of people we asked saying they do this,” the motoring association said, but added that a survey it conducted had found those aged between 18 and 24 were twice as likely to resort to boiling water.

Amber cold weather health alert issued

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issued the first amber cold weather health alert of the season this week.

The amber warning covers the east and north of England, midlands, and Yorkshire and the Humber, with yellow alerts coming into place for the South East, South West and London at 8am on Tuesday, lasting until 6pm on Saturday.

Dr Agostinho Sousa, from the UKHSA, said: “This is the first amber Cold Weather Health Alert of the season, but we can expect more as we approach winter, and it is vital to check in on vulnerable friends, family and neighbours to ensure they are well prepared for the onset of cold weather.

“Particularly if they are elderly or otherwise at increased risk.”
