Bitterly cold temperatures are swept the UK on Friday, alongside heavy snowfall, ice and freezing fog, particularly in western England.

Yellow warnings for snow and ice were in place across parts of the UK, with overnight temperatures falling to almost -13C in Scotland.

The Met Office warned that road and rail journeys could be disrupted due to the cold weather. Flights were also affected as airports struggled to clear snow.

Further snow and ice are expected.

Simon Calder has another update on flight cancellations from Heathrow.

British Airways has cancelled 68 short-haul flights on Thursday at its main base, Heathrow. Two pairs of flights linking Heathrow with Geneva, Madrid and Munich, as well as services to and from Amsterdam, Barcelona, Basel, Berlin, Brussels, Budapest, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Hanover, Helsinki, Luxembourg, Munich, Nice, Oslo, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Rome, Stockholm, Stuttgart, Venice and Zurich, were cancelled.

Domestic services to and from Aberdeen, Belfast City, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle and two serving Manchester have also been grounded.

Chicago O'Hare Airport is giving out free hot chocolate to help travellers stay warm in the deep freeze, according to Independent travel correspondent Simon Calder.

It says: "We're serving up complimentary hot chocolate to help you stay toasty, O'Hare! Stop by any Arrival Level Info Desk now until 2pm for a cup of tasty cocoa."

Following heavy snowfall overnight in western England, Network Rail has warned customers of South Western Railway to check before they travel this morning.

It warned that some first train services tomorrow morning may be cancelled while the routes are cleared of snow.

“We have been working hard with South Western Railway, and our other train operators, to prepare for cold weather on this route so we can keep our passengers moving through winter," said David Dickson, chief operating officer for Network Rail’s Wessex route. 

“With snow and freezing conditions expected, we are asking passenger to please check before they travel.”

Bristol Airport is shut until 8am because of falling snow.

It asks passengers to monitor its social media feeds and contact airlines directly.

In non-snow related train news, there are delays on South Western Railway on routes between Weybridge and Earlsfield due to delayed engineering work. Lines are all open, but the operator warned that there could be cancellations or delays of up to 30 minutes.

Bournemouth Airport is also shut due to snow blocking the airfield. A further update will be made at 8am.

A handful of short-haul British Airways flights from Heathrow have been cancelled this morning, to destinations including Stockholm, Prague, Newcastle, Paris and Madrid.

Passengers should contact British Airways for more information.
