Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Every so often, Jack Sheldon from Jack’s Flight Club selects a flight deal from the UK for Independent readers that you can’t afford to miss. This week: return flights to Barbados from £345 return.

During the short winter days, a cheap flight to the Caribbean is the stuff daydreams are made of. We’ve found some excellent deals with Virgin Atlantic, flying non-stop to Barbados in high season to make it a reality. Weekly departures from both London and Manchester to Bridgetown are currently available, with cocktails onboard to get the holiday started.

How to book

Google Flights makes it easy to find the dates on this one. Just enter your departure airport and destination (Bridgetown, Barbados), then filter the airlines to just show Virgin Atlantic. This will update the calendar and clearly show the cheapest dates to fly, which will be highlighted in green.

Once you’ve chosen your dates from those available, either proceed to book the itinerary directly on Virgin Atlantic’s website, or go to Skyscanner, re-enter your itinerary to see which travel agent is offering the flight at the best price, and book with the agent of your choice.

Depart from

London Gatwick (LGW)

Manchester (MAN)

To

Bridgetown, Barbados (BGI) – £345 return

When to fly

Between January – October for departures from London, excluding peak summer. Manchester departures end in March.

When to book

These fares should last for two or three more days.

Pro tip:

Transatlantic flights rarely include a checked bag, but you can add this later with the airline either online or by phone. It’s also worth checking multiple online travel agents when you book the flight, as some offer checked baggage at a lower cost than Virgin Atlantic charge.
