Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Seen from the deck of a catamaran that's slicing its way through azure waters, it's easy to understand why Barbados is the perfect luxury getaway.

It’s a captivating sight, with miles of idyllic beaches and picture-perfect palm trees framing an island paradise that’s a breathtaking testament to nature’s beauty.

Ease yourself into the laid-back Bajan lifestyle with a walk around Bridgetown's charming colonial-era Downtown district, a Unesco world heritage site. And make sure to stop by Carlisle Bay, one of the island’s most beautiful and serene beaches where, if you arrive early on a Sunday morning, you might see the local racehorses bathing in the sea.

The north-east is an Edenic nature reserve, brimming with tropical plants and animals, where you could expect to see agouti, armadillos, brocket deer, caimans and monkeys. Take to the ocean and you might even find yourself swimming with sea turtles, or why not head below the surface? A tour of the island’s many underwater treasures, such as its shipwrecks and reefs, can be made by snorkel, scuba or even submarine.

But sun, sand and beautiful beaches are just a part of the island’s charm. No trip to Barbados, the birthplace of rum, is complete without a cocktail. Try a glass of punch at the Mount Gay Visitor Centre (mountgayrum.com) while finding out more about the oldest rum in the world. There’s also a full calendar of food and artistic festivals to keep you entertained throughout the year, including the island’s first beach wellness festival on 2 and 3 September.
