What is WWDC 2018? Andrew Griffin explains

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has taken to the stage at his company's annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) to unveil iOS 12 – the next major software update for the iPhone – as well as new apps and features for Apple Watch, iPad, iPhone and Mac.

"We now have over 20 million Apple developers worldwide," Mr Cook said as he opened the keynote, which paid tribute to them through a video in the style of a nature documentary.

The Independent covered all of the event and the fallout live from San Jose, where the event is being hosted.

Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of software engineering, is now on stage to tell us what we have all been expecting: iOS12

"For iOS 12, we're doubling down on performance."

iOS 12 will be available on all the same devices that iOS 11 is on. But it will be faster, better and more efficient. Apps will launch 40 per cent faster.

We're on to augmented reality now. "AR changes the way we have fun and the way we work," Federighi says.

NEW APP ALERT: Federighi introduces 'Measure'

anthony.cuthbertson4 June 2018 18:20

This looks pretty impressive actually. Using the AR features in the app, it's possible to measure the dimensions of objects, such as a suitcase.

You can also use Measure in iOS 12 to project virtual objects into the real world to see how much space they will take up. Federighi pulls up an electric guitar.

Here's the opening video – like something straight from Planet Earth.
