UFC 276 Preview: Best Bets

Israel Adesanya and teammate Alexander Volkanovski shone at UFC 276 on Saturday night, with both men retaining their titles at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

In the main event, Adesanya was largely untroubled by Jared Cannonier in easing to a decision win, remaining middleweight champion and unbeaten in the division with the victory. Some had predicted that Adesanya’s versatile striking game and ring IQ would prove too much for the powerful but perhaps one-dimensional Cannonier, and that proved to be the case as the “Last Stylebender” filled out 49-46, 49-46 and 50-45 scorecards.

In the co-main event, Volkanovski – who trains with Adesanya at City Kickboxing – made it a clean sweep in his trilogy with Max Holloway. Volkanovski outpointed Holloway in 2019 to win the featherweight title before replicating the feat in 2020 to retain the gold. Many fans disputed the Australian’s second victory over Hawaiian Holloway, but the champion left no doubt on Saturday, winning all five rounds on all three judges’ scorecards. The numbers reflected a masterful showing of striking offence and defence from Volkanovski, who made Holloway look like a UFC newcomer rather than a fighter seen by some as the greatest featherweight of all time. Dricus Du Plessis def. Brad Tavares via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).

A fair result, as Indy Sport sees it.

Tavares vs Du Plessis – Round 3

Both men land punches in a scrappy exchange. A left head kick gets through for Tavares, who then smacks Du Plessis with a body kick off the other side!

A right overhand connects for Du Plessis, though, and he tags on a left hook, too.

Du Plessis is landing punches with increasing frequency now... Both men are covered in blood; is it all Tavares’? It might be!

Du Plessis lands a well-timed knee in close as Tavares ducks while coming forward.

That will be the last major action of the fight!

Tavares vs Du Plessis – Round 2

Du Plessis lands a body kick then steps in with a knee to the liver. Now he comes forward again with one-twos... he’s cut Tavares’ face quite badly!

Tavares steps forward but is almost caught with a spinning back elbow; he partially blocks it. Now the American kicks low.

Du Plessis wings a left hand then shoots for a takedown, but Tavares sprawls well to defend it. A nice counter jab from the American now as Du Plessis rushes forward with punches.

Du Plessis has been breathing with his mouth wide open for some time now... Still, he’s got enough in the tank to stumble Tavares with a counter punch with seconds left in the round!

Tavares vs Du Plessis – Round 1

Du Plessis seems to be caught by a hook while storming forward.

He’s able to clinch against the fence, but an ill-advised trip from the South African sees him land below Tavares in side control.

Du Plessis is able to squirm into space and reach the fence, where he stands. Tavares backs him up now and sees a head kick blocked, but he hurts Du Plessis with a flurry!

Du Plessis is able to stand quickly, but he’s being held against the fence by Tavares now. Du Plessis gets free and partially lands a spinning back fist. He’s going for broke in every exchange and that may just cost him.

Max Holloway and Alexander Volkanovski engaged in an invigorated exchange at the UFC 276 pre-fight press conference on Thursday.

Volkanovski dethroned Holloway as champion in 2019 with a points victory, before repeating the feat in 2020 to retain the title. The latter result was disputed by many fans, and Holloway’s subsequent wins against Calvin Kattar and Yair Rodriguez have led the Hawaiian back to Volkanovski, as the pair prepare for a trilogy bout in tonight’s co-main event in Las Vegas.

“This guy is talking about a three-peat or something. This guy don’t even got three highlights in the UFC,” Holloway said of Australian Volkanovski, who has beaten Brian Ortega and Chan Sung Jung since his second fight with “Blessed”.

“All week, all I’ve heard is you guys talking about damage. All you guys: ‘Damage this, damage that.’ I’m known for taking damage, and he’s known for not giving it.”

“Oh, Max came to play. I love it,” replied Volkanovski, who is on a remarkable 21-fight win streak. “That’s why you can’t spar anymore, because you get punched in the head too much.”
