"Happy Birthday to you" UFC fighter joins in singing

Glover Teixeira completed his fairytale run to the UFC light heavyweight title on Saturday night, submitting Jan Blachowicz in the main event of UFC 267 to become the second oldest champion in the company’s history.

Two days after turning 42, Teixeira finished Blachowicz with a neck crank in the second round, capping off an enthralling card on ‘Fight Island’ in Abu Dhabi. The Brazilian had previously challenged for the belt in 2014, when he was outpointed by Jon Jones, and his recent five-fight win streak seemed to represent a race against time to make one last run at the gold. And Teixeira produced a stunning display in the Etihad Arena to beat Blachowicz, the finish seeing the challenger take down the champion, before easing into mount position, taking his opponent’s back and flattening him out. From there, the Brazilian locked in a neck crank that forced Blachowicz to tap out immediately.

In the evening’s co-main event, Petr Yan outpointed Cory Sandhagen to win the interim bantamweight title, and elsewhere on the card, rising star Khamzat Chimaev returned after a 13-month absence to secure his fourth stoppage win from as many UFC outings. The Russian-born Swede, who had suffered badly from Covid-19 over the last year, submitted Li Jingliang in the first round of their contest, with the Chinaman passing out in a rear naked choke.

Re-live the UFC 267 main card and prelims below.

UFC 267 – Ankalaev def. Oezdemir

The blood trickling down Oezdemir’s left eye was coming from a horrible cut across the Swiss’ eyebrow. Yikes.

We’ll go to the judges’ scorecards. Is Ankalaev’s win streak going to extend to seven? Yes!

Ankalaev def. Oezdemir via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28).

Round 3

“This is your life, Volkan! Stay active and kick.” That’s the message from Oezdemir’s corner.

Ankalaev lands a blunt right hook. He tries another, but Oezdemir blocks. The Swiss then blocks a head kick attempt.

Oezdemir flicks out a front kick, but it narrowly misses. Another counter right hook from Ankalaev – it’s worked wonders for him tonight.

The Russian tries for a single-leg but can only drive Oezdemir back to the fence.

That’s where the fight ends.

Round 2

Some solid leg kicks from Oezdemir.

Ankalaev catches a body kick and immediately turns it into a takedown, though.

Good work from Oezdemir to get back to his feet and get to the fence. Ankalaev still has a body lock from behind, however.

Oezdemir with impressive defence to remain on his feet, before he manages to break free as the round comes to an end.

Round 2

Big knees up the middle from Ankalaev in the clinch.

Whenever Oezdemir steps in to strike, he looks a little nervous.

And no wonder, he’s being pieced up – as his left eye is showing with some bruising and blood.

UFC 267 – Ankalaev vs Oezdemir

Round 1

Oezdemir seems to have recovered fairly well, but he does look on edge...

The Swiss eats some right hands late in the round.

After starting slowly, Ankalaev likely takes that frame 10-9.

Round 1

Here we go, a top-10 light heavyweight meeting to get us going.

Early controlled pressure from Oezdemir. He soon lands a low kick, one-two up top, and uppercut!

Ankalaev tries for a takedown, but a flying knee attempt from Oezdemir distracts the Russian!

Oezdemir then connects with an elbow. A goood start for the former title challenger.

Oh! But Ankalaev, almost out of nowhere, gets a knockdown with a left hand!

UFC 267 – Ribas def. Jandiroba

Round 3

Jandiroba is able to recover and the women enter the final moments of this fight trading punches up close.

Jandiroba shoots for a double-leg, but Ribas sprawls well to stop it.

We’ll go to the judges’ scorecards, but it feels like Ribas came from behind there to win this contest...

Yes! Ribas def. Jandiroba via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).

UFC 267 – Ribas vs Jandiroba

Round 3

A cute counter right hook from Ribas, then a slick uppercut. Jandiroba responds with some sharp jabs.

Just as in Round 2, Jandiroba tries to turn a single-leg takedown attempt into a trip. Again, it’s denied by Ribas.

Oh! Ribas catches her compatriot with a head kick and it wobbles Jandiroba! An uppercut follows and Jandiroba is in trouble...

She’s stumbling along the fence...

UFC 267 – Ribas vs Jandiroba

Round 2

A solid right hand from Ribas this time! She follows it up with a period of sustained pressure.

Jandiroba shoots for a single-leg takedown, then tries to turn it into a trip, but Ribas counters beautifully – she lands in side control! A brief scramble ensues and the women are back on their feet.

They end the round clinched against the fence, with Ribas in control and landing knees. She tries a trip, too, to no avail.

Ribas likely takes this round, meaning the Brazilians will probably enter Round 3 with the scorecards level.
