Five of Conor McGregor's best UFC fights

Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier failed to settle their rivalry tonight after a dramatic clash in the main event of UFC 264.

The latest bout marked their third meeting, with McGregor having knocked out Poirier in the first round when they fought at featherweight in 2014, before the American exacted his revenge this January by handing the Irishman the first KO loss of his career. That lightweight contest in Abu Dhabi ended in the second round, with many pundits predicting another early finish as the pair go head-to-head in a sold-out T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

There was in fact an early finish, but not an expected one. The trilogy came to a close after McGregor lost to Poirier via doctor stoppage, with the Irishman unable to continue after sustaining an ankle injury at the end of the first round.

McGregor has just one win in the last four-and-a-half years – a 40-second demolition of Donald Cerrone in January 2020 – while Poirier now has eight victories and one defeat in that same period of time. The ‘Diamond’ has established himself as the No 1 lightweight contender in the UFC, and – having previously held interim gold – could have fought for the vacant undisputed title at 155lbs this spring. Instead, Poirier opted for a money fight with McGregor.

Dustin Poirier tells Conor McGregor he got what he deserved in UFC 264 defeat

Dustin Poirier insists “karma is a mirror” as Conor McGregor prepares to undergo surgery on a suspected broken leg following their latest fight at UFC 264.

McGregor suffered the injury during the first round of their trilogy bout in Las Vegas with Poirier getting the win via doctor’s stoppage with the Irishman unable to continue.

The build-up to the fight was marred by McGregor seriously threatening his opponent’s safety and he continued his tirade against Poirier in his post-match interview, this time including references to the American’s wife.

Poirier (27-7 MMA) addressed the comments after the contest with UFC commentator Joe Rogan in his post-fight interview, saying: “I can take, you know, the trash talk. There’s no holds barred with the trash talk, right?

Charles Oliveira set to take on Dustin Poirier following McGregor fight

Dustin Poirier could take on Charles Oliveira for the UFC lightweight title after the American’s victory over Conor McGregor, according to Dana White.

White said after Saturday’s main event that Poirier would take on Oliveira for the title, while also indicating that McGregor would get a fourth fight against Poirier once he recovers from his leg injury.

“When Conor is healed and ready to go, we’ll do the rematch, I guess,” White said. “Poirier will do his thing until Conor is ready.” Oliveira reportedly told ESPN that he expects to fight Poirier in December.

Oliveira, who was ringside in Las Vegas, said after the fight: “It is sad. We don’t ever want to see a guy lose like that but it happens so congratulations to Dustin (Poirier). This is MMA, it is unpredictable. We never know what is going to happen.

“This is a fight (against Poirier) that I thought was going to happen. It was supposed to happen for a long time so if it happens… I am ready to go.”

White: McGregor will get fourth fight once healed

UFC president Dana White condemned McGregor’s comments both before and after the fight, before dropping a strong hint that the pair could meet for a fourth time when McGregor has recovered.

“I don’t like that, that’s not good,” said White. “Leave people’s families and wives and all that stuff out of it. Family has nothing to do with it.

“It sucks for it to end that way, it’s brutal, it’s not the way you want to see fights end. It’s a break of the lower tibia in his left shin and he will go into surgery tomorrow (Sunday).

“The fight didn’t get finished. We’ll see how this whole thing plays out. Who knows how long Conor is out? Poirier will do his thing until Conor is ready.

“Dustin Poirier will fight for the title (against lightweight champion Charles Oliveira) and when Conor is healed and ready to go, you do the rematch, I guess.”
