At 30-30, Kasatkina sends a simple forehand stroke long of the white line but (incorrectly) challenges the call. Then, she attempts to save the game with an audacious tweener but her return can only find the net. Game, Kerber.

Kerber has that fantastic ability to deliver when her back is up against the wall. At 30-30, with the Russian at the net, the former world No 1 delivers a reaching, sweeping crosshand return that fizzes across the face of Kasatkina who is caught completely off-guard. The youngster holds on at break point but Kerber pushes on for the first break of the set.

Another comfortable game for Kerber as Kasatkina hands her the win with yet another unforced error. 3-1 to the German.

Kasatkina holds but it was Kerber who enjoyed the shot of that game. After being pushed further and further to her left by a series of thumping forehand shots from the youngster, Kerber eventually settled the matter with another inch-perfect shot that whizzed through the narrow space to Kasatkina's right before landing sweetly at the back of the court.

Kasatkina takes it to 40-0 before Kerber gets her foot back in the door with a forehand smash from the net. But it doesn't take long for the Russian to snatch the break with a snatched forehand winner that flies from right to left across court, beyond the reach of the former world No 1 who now looks unsettled.

Yet another double fault from Kasatkina - her sixth of the net - takes the game to 30-15 in Kerber's favour before the Russian fires a thumping forehand stroke beyond the baseline. The youngster cries out in frustration but quickly rallies to take the game to 40-30. She's finding it impossible to iron out the inconsistencies in her game, though, and a netted forehand from the 21-year-old sees Kerber break back immediately.

Kasatkina's form is continuing to wildly vacillate here on Centre Court. After taking this game to advantage with some fantastic backhand shots, the youngster places wide what should have been a simple forehand winner down the line. Kerber holds on but finds herself a break point down once again after her opponent skips into a bouncing ball to the left of the court before dinking over a smartly-disguised drop-shot for the point. Kasatkina pushes on and at last finds her break.

Kerber is starting to look fatigued. Her play is lacking the fluidity of her earlier exchanges and her movement is tense. Still, she's got the ability to produce something out of nothing - as seen by a lightning fast crosscourt stroke that fizzes beyond the reach of Kasatkina. The German holds on and rather unexpectedly takes the game to 40-30 before breaking with a forehand winner that landed right in the bottom left-hand corner of Kasatkina's court. An unlikely break but Kerber will take that nonetheless.

Wow. Kasatkina has broken back immediately. Kerber is really struggling to hold serve here. Compared to the energy of the Russian's strokes, the former world No 1's play looks drained and unimaginative.

A massive exchange between the two women comes to an end after Kerber's forehand shot lands beyond the white line. 30-30. A Kasatkina double-fault follows before Kerber gets the break with a stunning shot. The Russian had dropped the ball short to the left of the German but the 30-year-old shows great speed to reach it before pushing her return up and over the net and into the space behind Kasatkina.
