Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Juan Martin del Potro and Rafael Nadal go head to head on Centre Court in what is today's standout quarter-final.

After beating Gilles Simon 7-6 (7-1) 7-6 (7-5) 5-7 7-6 (7-5), Del Potro is making his first quarter-final appearance at SW19 since 2013.

Nadal, meanwhile, reached his first Wimbledon quarter-final since 2011 with a straight-set win over unseeded Czech Jiri Vesely.

Both men have struggled with injuries over the years but it is Nadal who heads into the clash as the favourite, having not yet dropped a set at the All England Club.

*Del Potro 5-7 2-3 Nadal

Another long rally gets the crowd going but after 21 shots it's Del Potro who eventually gives way with a sloppy backhand that sails wide of the tramlines. Nadal pushes on and subsequently punishes his opponent with a forehand winner that the Argentine had no hope of returning. The world No 1 holds.

Federer 6-2 7-6 (7-5) 5-7 4-6 11-12 Anderson

Elsewhere, Roger Federer is in serious danger of a shock exit as he struggles to find a breakthrough in the fifth and final set against Kevin Anderson. The Swiss has just been broken and the South African will now serve for the match.

Del Potro 5-7 3-3 Nadal*

It's proving a far more subdued affair here on Centre Court as DelPo holds on once again in the face of Nadal's relentless energy and power.

*Del Potro 5-7 3-4 Nadal

That was a hugely impressive game from Nadal, as he holds to love. He's really finding his groove now, having comfortably knocked his opponent about from left to right with his range of baseline strokes. His two best shots in that game came from the T where, on both occasions, he placed the ball into the far-left corner with a delicious forehand.

Game. Set. Match.

Federer 6-2 7-6 (7-5) 5-7 4-6 11-13 Anderson

The South African has done it! He knocks out the reigning champion in the most dramatic of circumstances. What a fantastic match!

Match report to follow shortly...

Del Potro 5-7 4-4 Nadal*

Still no break in this second set. For all Nadal's power and precision - I mean, there's no doubt that he's in full control here - the Argentine is still clinging on.

*Del Potro 5-7 4-4 Nadal

I may have spoken too quickly... DelPo is currently 30-0 up.

Samuel Lovett11 July 2018 17:35

*Del Potro 5-7 4-4 Nadal

The Argentine looked to have been 40-0 up after seemingly landing a clean forehand stroke but Nadal challenged and hawk-eye showed it to be out. 30-15.

*Del Potro 5-7 5-4 Nadal

Break! Back-to-back errors on Nadal's forehand hands DelPo the game! The Argentine will serve for the set.
