From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Your support makes all the difference.

Day one of the 2017 Wimbledon Championships saw Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal open their campaigns with straightforward straight-sets wins.

Today Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, who have won 10 titles at SW19 between them, will attempt to do the same when they take on Alexandr Dolgopolov and Martin Klizan respectively on Centre Court.

One player who they won't want to follow in the footsteps of is Stanislas Wawrinka. The world No 3 was the biggest casualty of the opening day, losing in four sets to the world No 49 Daniil Medvedev.

Also in action on Tuesday is women's No 1 Angelique Kerber, the reigning US Open champion and a finalist here last year.

Lopez retires against Mannarino

Feliciano Lopez's superb grass-court season is over at the worst possible time after the Spanish 19th seed was forced to withdraw from his first-round Wimbledon match against Adrian Mannarino with a foot injury.

The Queen's winner and Stuttgart runner-up won the first set 7-5 on Court 16 but lost both the second and third 6-1 and was trailing 4-3 in the fourth when he threw in the towel.

Djokovic and Federer urge Wimbledon to change rules

Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer have both suggested the rules need to be changed at Grand Slam events to lessen the amount of injury-related retirements during matches.

Both Djokovic's and Federer's first-round Wimbledon opponents, Martin Klizan and Alexandr Dolgopolov respectively, entered Tuesday's matches on Centre Court already carrying injuries and ended up retiring before their matches were completed.

There is a rule on the ATP Tour that allows injured players to retire before their first-round matches and still keep their prize money. However, that rule is not in place at any of the four Grand Slam events. With £35,000 at stake for a first-round loss at Wimbledon, lower-ranked players carrying injuries are unlikely to withdraw and surrender their prize money.

Second seed Djokovic suggested: "Maybe it should be addressed.

"I think the new rule that the ATP has reinforced allows players who deserve already, who have made it to the Grand Slam main draw, to get what they deserve, but at the other hand allow someone else to play if they can.

"I support that kind of rule."

Tournament favourite Federer added: "The question always is, should they have started the match at all?

"That, only the player can answer really, in my opinion. You hope that they would give up their spot for somebody else, even though they deserve to be in there, but fitness not allowing them.

"Maybe the Grand Slams should adopt some of [the ATP rule], then maybe we would eliminate maybe half of the players [who retire]."

Kuznetsova safely through

Svetlana Kuznetsova, the women's seventh seed and a three-time quarter-finalist here, is into the second round after 6-3 6-2 win over Ons Jabeur.

The conclusion of that match signals the end of today's action in the women's draw.
