From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Cori Gauff 's fairytale run at Wimbledon is over after the 15-year-old lost to former world No 1 Simona Halep on Court One.

Gauff had already defeated another former No 1 – beating Venus Williams in the first round – and the young American completed an astonishing comeback in the third round, saving match points to defeat Polona Hercog 3-6 7-6(7) 7-5.

But last year’s French Open champion Halep, who recorded an impressive straight-sets win over Victoria Azarenka in her last outing, proved too strong recording a straight sets win.

Halep 2-2 Gauff* (40-40)

Despite Gauff's resistance, Halep brings up BREAK POINT with a drop shot, but Gauff saves it with a beauty of a flat backhand down the line!

Nip and tuck so far - rallies of a a very high quality.

Halep 4-2 Gauff*

Halep holds after being taken to deuce again, and does it in spectacular style!

Gauff looks to have won the point with a backhand down the line, but a forehand slice into the open court on the run by Halep is executed to perfection.

Even Coco applauds it...

*Halep 4-3 Gauff

Gauff holds, also after being taken to deuce, as Halep backhand drifts wide.

Little to choose between them so far, but the Romanian has the break...

*Halep 4-3 Gauff (40-40)

Halep starts the game with a double fault, and at 15-15 the seeded player goes just wide with a forehand on the run (she challenges, it fails, and she's out of challenges...)

Halep plugs away and brings up game point, but goes wide with a pass... deuce again.

Halep 5-3 Gauff*

Once again, Halep is off the hook and is a game away now from the first set.

Essentially, whoever is being more aggressive in points is having the most success thus far...

*Halep 6-3 Gauff

HALEP WINS THE FIRST SET!

The scoreboard rapidly changes to 0-40 as Halep starts to exert her power, and she looks to have lost it when a shot is called out on the baseline, but a challenge shows that it clipped the line.

She saves one with a big serve, but Halep chases down a weak volley and passes crosscourt to take the set.

It was tight, but Halep was superior in that set, particularly at the end...
