Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Cori Gauff 's fairytale run at Wimbledon is over after the 15-year-old lost to former world No 1 Simona Halep on Court One.

Gauff had already defeated another former No 1 – beating Venus Williams in the first round – and the young American completed an astonishing comeback in the third round, saving match points to defeat Polona Hercog 3-6 7-6(7) 7-5.

But last year’s French Open champion Halep, who recorded an impressive straight-sets win over Victoria Azarenka in her last outing, proved too strong recording a straight sets win.

FIRST SET FEDERER, 6-1!

Simple as you like for Federer, who takes the first set 6-1.

Berrettini 1-6 1-2 Federer*

Federer breaks early in the set again, and the momentum is completely with the eight-time champion here.

His Italian opponent looks slightly fazed by the occasion.

*Berrettini 1-6 1-3 Federer

A hold to love, and a final point where Berrettini missed the ball completely.

It's been a tough opening half an hour for the Italian...

Berrettini 1-6 2-3 Federer*

The Italian holds to 15 for his third game of the match, as he finally connects with some aggressive 1st serves.

I have to say, for the first time in this Championships, it's looking very murky overhead.

Will we get our first spot of rain???

*Berrettini 1-6 2-4 Federer*

After Berrettini opens the game with a backhand pass, Federer then strolls to the game, with the Italian leaving his rally ball way too short.

A harsh lesson so far.
