Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Roger Federer returns to Centre Court on Tuesday as he opens his Wimbledon 2019 campaign with a match against South African youngster Lloyd Harris.

He will be followed by Serena Williams, who is attempting to win at SW19 for an eighth time. She plays Italian outsider Giulia Gatto-Monticone, who is making her Wimbledon debut aged 31.

Elsewhere, new World No 1 Ashleigh Barty will begin proceedings on Court No 1 with a match against Saisai Zheng.

British number one Johanna Konta is also in action, with a first round clash against the Romanian Ana Bogdan, who has never been beyond the second round at Wimbledon.

Follow the live action below:

Kyrgios 7-6(4) 3-6 5-5 Thompson*

From 30-0 up to 30-30, as a successful challenge and a delightful backhand volley come off for Thompson.

Then... controversy... Kyrgios' 2nd serve  called out then overruled - point to be replayed. Kyrgios is not happy about it. He hits a ball out of the court, gets a warning and then complains to the umpire saying that the line judge should be fined.

Regardless, he closes the game out with two booming serves. Can't take your eyes off this...

BRIT UPDATE

DAN EVANS WINS, beating Federico Delbonis 6-3, 7-6(5) 6-3 on court 18.

Harriet Dart is also serving for the match at 5-4 in the deciding set on court 14 - will keep you posted.

*Kyrgios 7-6(4) 3-6 6-5 Thompson

Out of NOWHERE, KYRGIOS BREAKS!

Kyrgios clinches the break, to love, with a backhand pass crosscourt. Thompson is livid, and gets a warning of his own for racket abuse.

It's fiery between the Aussies on court 3! Kyrgios will serve for the third set...

BRIT UPDATE

HARRIET DART WINS! She defeats Chrstina McHale 4-6, 6-4 6-4 on court 14.

That's now 4/4 for British players so far - can James Ward make it five? He's down a break in the fourth set, leading by two sets to one.

Kyrgios 7-6(4) 3-6 6-6 Thompson*

THOMPSON BREAKS! And what a game this was!

Underarm serve alert! With two set points at 40-15, Kyrgios uses an underarm serve but Thompson is alive to it, and wins the point at the net.

Thompson then saves a second set point with great touch at the net... deuce.

Kyrgios then hits a drop shot into the net, but fires his forehand from side to side to save the break point!

Thompson is lucky with another net cord at deuce, and this time converts his break point as Kyrgios hits a drop shot into the net... AGAIN!

Kyrgios gave that away completely... into a breaker we go!

Kieran Jackson2 July 2019 13:33

*Kyrgios 7-6(4) 3-6 6-6 Thompson (4-2)

Kyrgios re-focuses, and has the mini-break at the change of ends... can Kyrgios claim another set on a tiebreak?!

Kieran Jackson2 July 2019 13:37

Kyrgios 7-6(4) 3-6 6-6 Thompson (5-5)

A wayward backhand down the line from Kyrgios hits the net, and the mini-break is gone... big point.

Kieran Jackson2 July 2019 13:40

Kyrgios 7-6(4) 3-6 6-6 Thompson* (6-5)

Kyrgios draws Thompson in with another drop shot, but Thompson hits a backhand into the net.

Thompson screams... it's SET POINT KYRGIOS!

Kieran Jackson2 July 2019 13:41

Kyrgios 7-6(4) 3-6 6-6 Thompson* (6-6)

SET POINT SAVED!

Very solid from Thompson, who saves the set point with an accurate inside-in forehand. 6-6, and they change ends...

Kieran Jackson2 July 2019 13:42

*Kyrgios 7-6(4) 3-6 6-6 Thompson (7-7)

SET POINT BLOWN!

Kyrgios has set point after Thompson shanks a forehand, but Kyrgios plays a bizarre forehand slice which sails long... back level.
