Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Roger Federer returns to Centre Court on Tuesday as he opens his Wimbledon 2019 campaign with a match against South African youngster Lloyd Harris.

Elsewhere, new World No 1 Ashleigh Barty will begin proceedings on Court No 1 with a match against Saisai Zheng.

Kyrgios 7-6(4) 2-1 Thompson*
The antics continue, as a diving volley leaves Kyrgios flat-out on the ground for a good 20 seconds!
Thompson meanwhile, is growing frustrated at how he can’t capitalise on opportunities on Kyrgios’ serve, mainly due to the sheer power of the first serve.
On serve nonetheless.
Kyrgios 7-6(4) 3-2 Thompson*
Thompson escapes from a tight game, and then is unlucky at 30-30 on Kyrgios’ serve when Nick’s backhand pass clips the top of the net. He remarks afterwards “I’ve never got down that low in my life!”.
Still on serve.
Kyrgios 7-6(4) 3-4 Thompson*
THOMPSON BREAKS!
Kyrgios is getting closer to a successful tweener!
On the first point of Thompson’s service game, he hits it in play, but Thompson puts away the volley and holds to love.
Next game, Kyrgios double faults at 15-15, and then can’t adjust his volley after a net cord.
TWO BREAK POINTS for Thompson, and on number two Kyrgios tries a tweener lob with Thompson at the net, but it goes wide and Thompson has the break!
American ninth seed Sloane Stephens, who has crashed out in the opening round of the Championships in the previous two years, breezed past Switzerland's Timea Bacsinszky 6-2 6-4 in her tournament opener.
Also advancing to the second round were Belgium's Elise Mertens, who beat Fiona Ferro 6-2 6-0 and China's Wang Qiang who eased past Vera Lapko 6-2 6-2. Lesia Tsurenko, the 32nd seed, fell 6-3 6-2 to Barbora Strycova.
*Kyrgios 7-6(4) 3-5 Thompson
Stunning 3 points!
Break point chance for Kyrgios, and after a 20+ shot rally, Thompson puts away a smash at the net.
From deuce Thompson wins the game with two eye-of-the-needle backhand passes down the line, the second after Kyrgios pulls off a tweener lob at the net!
It may be all fun and games to Kyrgios, but he’s serving to stay in the set here...
Kyrgios 7-6(4) 3-6 Thompson*
SECOND SET THOMPSON!
Kyrgios broken to 15, as he plays some silly shots, with Thompson remaining dogged and keeping the ball in play.
Its a set apiece on court 3!
