Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Andy Murray returned to Wimbledon for the first time since 2017, while Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams were also in action on a bumper day at SW19.

Murray won his first match in the men's doubles alongside Pierre-Hugues Herbert as the pair prevailed 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-0. Murray will return to the court on Friday alongside Williams after the American recovered from losing the first set to Slovenian qualifier Kaja Juvan.

Elsewhere, Nadal's blockbuster clash with hothead Nick Kyrgios lived up to its billing with a fiery encounter both on court and afterwards. Johanna Konta beat Katerina Siniakova to reach the third round, while Roger Federer ended the hopes of British hopeful Jay Clarke in the day’s second match on No 1 Court.

COURT 1 UPDATE

Serena Williams took the second set 6-2, and is up a break in the third, 4-2, against Kaja Javan.

Kyrgios 3-6 6-3 2-2 Nadal*

Kyrgios also holds to love, completely by finding his range on serve.

Very, very even.

*Kyrgios 3-6 6-3 2-3 Nadal

There's an opening for Kyrgios at 0-15, but he nets a drop shot when the opportunity was very much there.

Rafa recovers from there, and holds to 15. On serve.

Hearing rumours that Kyrgios called the umpire "a disgrace" at the change of ends. Heated.

Here's a video of Kyrgios' audacious underarm serve...

Nick Kyrgios to the umpire:

"You're no-one. You think you're important. You have no idea what's going on. You're a disgrace."

Kyrgios 3-6 6-3 3-3 Nadal*

TWEENER ALERT!

After cruising his way to 40-0, Kyrgios tries a tweener half-volley on the service line - straight into the net!

He then misses a routine backhand volley, but finishes the game off with a forehand put-away down the line. All-square again.

*Kyrgios 3-6 6-3 3-4 Nadal

Rafa holds to 15, absolutely nothing between them so far in this set.

Neither of them have given a sniff on serve.

COURT 1 UPDATE

Serena Williams is through! She dropped a set, but came through 2-6 6-2 6-4 against Kaja Juva in 1 hour and 34 minutes.

Kyrgios 3-6 6-3 4-4 Nadal*

Once again, Kyrgios returns the favour and holds to 15 - he is absolutely dialled in on serve right now.
