A vintage display from Roger Federer took him past Rafael Nadal into the Wimbledon 2019 final in an eagerly-anticipated first grass court match between the great rivals for 11 years on Friday.

The 40th career meeting between the golden duo with 38 Grand Slam titles between them, swung this way and that before Federer seized control to claim a 7-61-6 6-3 6-4 victory.

World number one and defending champion Novak Djokovic now stands between the 37-year-old Federer, the oldest finalist here since Ken Rosewall in 1974, and a record-equalling ninth Wimbledon title in Sunday's showpiece

FEDERER WINS THE THIRD SET!

Nadal slams the ball into the net, and Federer has a two sets to one lead!

*Nadal 6-7(3) 6-1 3-6 0-0 Federer (30-30)

Big moment for Nadal in the context of this match... can he edge his way in front?

Nadal 6-7(3) 6-1 3-6 1-0 Federer*

A significant hold, as Federer nets following a deep Nadal groundstroke!

Rafa turns to his box and does his traditional fist-pump!

No signs of fatigue from either player thus far....

Nadal 6-7(3) 6-1 3-6 1-0 Federer* (40-15)

Tremendous hustle by Nadal at 30-15 to return a fierce Federer smash, but the subsequent lob lands just beyond the baseline.

Two game points for the Swiss.

*Nadal 6-7(3) 6-1 3-6 1-1 Federer

Federer holds to 30, as the serve-forehand combination comes up trumps again!

2 hours, 17 minutes gone... in what direction is this fourth set heading?

Kieran Jackson12 July 2019 18:58

*Nadal 6-7(3) 6-1 3-6 1-1 Federer (0-30)

Momentum very much with Federer right now, as Nadal shanks a forehand long... he's done that more than usual today.

Can Nadal escape again?

Kieran Jackson12 July 2019 18:59

*Nadal 6-7(3) 6-1 3-6 1-1 Federer (15-30)

Lucky boy, Rafael Nadal.

A dead net cord creeps over to Federer's side. He'll take it...

*Nadal 6-7(3) 6-1 3-6 1-1 Federer (15-40)

TWO BREAK POINTS, for Federer, as the Swiss turns it on and swipes a forehand inside-out for a clean winner!

Huge moment in the match.

Nadal 6-7(3) 6-1 3-6 1-2 Federer*

FEDERER BREAKS!

Bizarre old point at 30-40. Federer challenges a let, and it's shown to be in, then Nadal challenges his subsequent first serve, it's out.

On the second serve, Federer's return clips the baseline, but Nadal's response doesn't and edges long!

It's all Federer at the moment, and he has the break in this fourth set!
