Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Follow the latest updates live from day one at Wimbledon as the third Grand Slam of the year gets underway in glorious sunshine at the All-England Club.

Defending champion Novak Djokovic gets proceedings on Centre Court underway as he takes on Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber, before second seen Naomi Osaka begins her account against Yulia Putintseva. Britain’s Kyle Edmund wraps up proceedings on Centre Court as he faces Spain’s Jaume Munar.

Elsewhere, Simona Halep faces Aliaksandra Sasnovich on No 1 Court with Alexander Zverev taking on Jiri Vesely, and an intriguing contest late in the day will see 10-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams face 15-year-old Cori Gauff, the youngest player in this year’s Wimbledom main draws. We have British involvement straight away!

Heather Watson, who famously came so close to beating Serena Williams here in 2015, is first up on court 12, playing American qualifier Caty McNally!

*McNally 1-0 Watson

Watson is serving first, and has been broken in the first game of the match, as a backhand drifts wide!

Not the start she would've wanted, on her tenth Wimbledon appearance...

McNally 1-1 Watson*

But Watson breaks straight back to 15, and we're back on serve straight away!

The match of the day on Day 1 is third on Court No.1, as 39-year-old Venus Williams takes on 15-year-old Cori Gauff in a match-up between the oldest player in the women's draw and the youngest!

It looks like Venus is pretty relaxed about playing someone 24 years her junior - she's launching a YouTube channel today!

*McNally 2-1 Watson

Meanwhile on court 12, neither player can hold serve as McNally breaks again!

Three games, three breaks.

SCORES UPDATE

On court 2, Stan Wawrinka is a break up on against Ruben Bemelmans

Elsewhere, last year's finalist Kevin Anderson is a break up against Andy Murray's doubles partner Pierre-Hugues Herbert on court 3.

Talking of Murray, what court will he play his first doubles match on?
