Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Follow the latest updates live from day one at Wimbledon as the third Grand Slam of the year gets underway in glorious sunshine at the All-England Club.

Defending champion Novak Djokovic gets proceedings on Centre Court underway as he takes on Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber, before second seen Naomi Osaka begins her account against Yulia Putintseva. Britain’s Kyle Edmund wraps up proceedings on Centre Court as he faces Spain’s Jaume Munar.

Elsewhere, Simona Halep faces Aliaksandra Sasnovich on No 1 Court with Alexander Zverev taking on Jiri Vesely, and an intriguing contest late in the day will see 10-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams face 15-year-old Cori Gauff, the youngest player in this year’s Wimbledom main draws. FABBIANO BREAKS!

Some ferocious hitting on Court 2 - who said grass courts were for shorter rallies?!

At 30-30, Tsitsipas double faults and it's BREAK POINT Fabbiano... and would you believe it, the Italian breaks on a net cord mid-rally...

Could we have our third big shock in an hour here at Wimbledon?

Kieran Jackson1 July 2019 17:55

Zverev's defeat means it's Coco Gauff's big moment on Court No.1, against hero Venus Williams!

Fabbiano 6-4 3-6 6-4 6-7(8) 5-3 Tsitsipas*

Fabbiano holds to 15, and seals the game with a passing shot straight through Tsitsipas at the net, and now the Greek will serve to stay in the match!

*V. Williams 2-4 Gauff

On Court 1, Coco Gauff has broken 39-year-old Venus Williams!

On Centre, Kyle Edmund has won the first set against Munar of Spain - 6-4. It's on serve early in the second...
