From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. But preliminary talks of an incredible partnership with 23-time Grand Slam champion Williams developed into a genuine proposition, and it was announced on Tuesday that they ill team up in an attempt to win the mixed doubles.

Murray and Williams needed to commit to the tournament by 11am, with the draw getting underway at midday. Follow the live action below.

Edmund 6-4 6-4 6-7(3) 3-6 2-3 Verdasco*

Some gutsy tennis from Kyle Edmund at 0-15, on the front-foot, reaps the rewards as he holds and remains in his match.

Still just a break in it...

Kieran Jackson3 July 2019 17:52

*Edmund 6-4 6-4 6-7(3) 3-6 2-4 Verdasco

Better from Edmund in that game, and he had a small window at 0-15, but missed the return down the line. He didn't get close after that.

Two more holds will do it for Verdasco.

Kieran Jackson3 July 2019 17:56

Edmund 6-4 6-4 6-7(3) 3-6 3-4 Verdasco*

Edmund still hanging on in there, closing out at 40-30 with a slice/volley finish. He's not done yet.

They've been playing for 3 hours and 32 minutes now...

Kieran Jackson3 July 2019 17:59

*Edmund 6-4 6-4 6-7(3) 3-6 3-5 Verdasco

Unfortunately for Edmund, Verdasco is showing no signs of blinking. At all.

Holds to love, with some breathtakingly efficient tennis after so long on court.

Edmund will now serve to stay in Wimbledon.

Kieran Jackson3 July 2019 18:03

*Edmund 6-4 6-4 6-7(3) 3-6 3-5 Verdasco (30-30)

An Edmund slice drifts long at 15-15, but Verdasco lets him off the hook (for now) with an error of his own.

Verdasco 2 points away...

Kieran Jackson3 July 2019 18:05

Edmund 6-4 6-4 6-7(3) 3-6 4-5 Verdasco*

Two big serves, and one forehand finish, gives Edmund the game. He's still battling right to the very *what looks like* end.

Verdasco will serve for a place in the third round...

Kieran Jackson3 July 2019 18:07

Edmund 6-4 6-4 6-7(3) 3-6 4-5 Verdasco* (40-0)

Edmund grunting as he runs side to side, putting everything into it, but not enough... 2 perfectly played points by Verdasco.

A net cord for Edmund, but Verdasco is up to it to pass crosscourt, Edmund falling desperately to the ground.

THREE MATCH POINTS...

Kieran Jackson3 July 2019 18:10

GAME, SET, MATCH FERNANDO VERDASCO! Verdasco def. Edmund 4-6, 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-3, 6-4

Supreme by Verdasco right at the very end, finishing it all off with a forehand winner, and after 3 hours and 43 minutes of captivating viewing on Centre Court, it's Fernando Verdasco who will play in round three on Friday, against Thomas Fabbiano of Italy!

Desperately disappointing for Edmund, who can't match his third round finish from last year, but I'm sure he'll come back stronger for it.

Maybe he needs a long recuperation period in order for his knee to heal fully.

Definite dark horse.
