This appeared a golden chance for Konta to become the first British woman to win a slam singles title since Virginia Wade at Wimbledon in 1977, but she let winning positions in both sets slip away and went down 7-5 7-6 (2).
In the end it was 19-year-old Vondrousova who showed the greater composure, coming back from 5-3 down in both sets. Re-live the action below:

At 30-0, the Czech sends a sweeping, curling forehand shot around the net that lands in the space behind her opponent. An exquisite shot, pulled out of the bag when she was on the back foot. 30-15.

Konta holds her nerve to see out the rest of the game. So far, so good.

A first drop shot from Vondrousova, into the wind, is executed to perfection. Konta scrambles to make the return but her pick-up lands beyond the baseline. 40-0. The Czech takes the next point to hold serve for love.

A hint of nerves from the Brit? For the first point of the game Konta sends a simple forehand return into the crowd. She trails 15-0.

Now it's Vondrousova turn to fluff her lines. She tries another drop shot but can only find the net. Konta kicks on from there and fires across a sweeping forehand winner into space. 30-15.

At 30-30, Konta takes it to another gear with an absolute powerdrive of a forehand shot that catches Vondrousova off-guard. The Czech rushes to make the return but can only flap at it. 40-30.
The Briton follows this up with an ace (confirmed after the umpire's intervention). She holds serve. 5-3.

Konta really starting to open up the shoulders here. She swats back Vondrousova's serve with a crunching backhand that lands to precision in the bottom right-hand corner of the court. The Czech was helpless to return it. 30-0.

The chance arises for the Briton to land the killer blow and seal the set but she slices a simple volley into the net. 40-40.
